Logan Gilbert 2022 Player Outlook: Abundant Upside At An Affordable Price
3 years agoThe final season line of a 4.68 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP do not paint the prettiest of pictures, but Gilbert showed plenty of reason for optimism as we move forward. He was one of the best pitchers in the game in June and July with a 31% K%, a 5.5% BB%, a 3.35 ERA, and a 0.99 WHIP. What is most impressive about Gilbert is the K/BB of 4.57 (anything above three is good for this metric). You do not often see that from young pitchers. He did a pretty good job limiting loud contact as well with an 8.8 Brl% and a 29 PA/HR (both of those numbers are right around league average). Gilbert threw four different pitches last year, but his four-seam fastball dominated his pitch usage with a 61.5% rate. He probably cannot get away with that for long, but the good news is that his slider and changeup both got plenty of whiffs (18.1% and 16.4% SwStr% respectively). He will be just 24 years old on Opening Day, so there is plenty of room for improvement in the future. He is by no means free in drafts, but with an ADP near 150, he's a great upside bet.
