Johnny Cueto Won't Pitch In Winter Ball
4 years agoSan Francisco Giants starting pitcher Johnny Cueto and the team have decided that he will not pitch in winter ball in his native Dominican Republic this year, given that the 2020 season was his first quasi-full season since returning from Tommy John surgery. Cueto was originally scheduled to pitch for the Estrellas Orientales. Manager Gabe Kapler said that the veteran right-hander pitched through some minor injuries last season, too, so it made no sense for the team to push the 34-year-old even further this winter. Cueto made just 13 starts for San Fran from 2018-2019 because of his elbow injury. He returned in 2020 to go 2-3 with a 5.40 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 56 strikeouts in 12 starts over 63 1/3 innings pitched. Another season removed from Tommy John surgery, Cueto could be more reliable for fantasy managers.
