Jalen Pitre 2023 NFL Player Outlook: A Tackle Premium Monster
1 year agoAs a rookie, Houston Texans defensive back Jalen Pitre led all defensive backs in total and solo tackles. Leading your position in the two most important IDP categories is no small feat for a freshman, especially one who was considered a CB/S tweener coming out of Baylor. The dominance with which Pitre led in these categories is particularly impressive, pacing his closest competition by 22 total tackles and 15 solos. There's also no reason to think Pitre cannot continue this high level of play, considering the fantasy-friendly way Demeco Ryans deployed Talanoa Hufanga with the 49ers last year. While you shouldn't expect Pitre to finish eighth in the NFL in total tackles again, he should continue to provide a high tackle floor in his second season. It's also fair to expect the Big 12 product will see more turnover opportunities in Ryans' scheme, especially given Pitre's ability to cover or blitz from the slot. For those reasons, Pitre should be a strong contender for the second DB off the board in most IDP drafts. Only Derwin James topples him in overall upside and projected consistency.
