Golden Tate 2019 Outlook: Can He Outperform His Situation?
5 years agoGolden Tate did not have a very productive 2018. After suffering through the first half of the season in Detroit, he was traded to Philadelphia where he had a difficult time acclimating to the new surroundings in his limited time there. In 2019 he gets a clean start in a new city, where, following the departure of Odell Beckham Jr. he should be the number one receiver, even if it is on a bad Giants team.
Before last season Tate had recorded at least 92 receptions in four straight seasons. This included 2017, when he and teammate Marvin Jones both finished as top-12 fantasy wide receivers. In New York this season with the lack of other dominant options in the passing game, Tate should again return to become a top-24 receiver at minimum. Tate's arrival should move Sterling Shepard to the outside, limiting his upside with a quarterback in Eli Manning who has struggled in recent years to throw to the outside receiver. Tate, on the other hand, will take over the Beckham role as the possession guy who can create his own yardage after the catch. Gaining yards after the catch is a skill which he has ranked near the top of in recent years with more than 400 yards after the catch on average.
If Tate can mesh with Manning, he and Saquon Barkley should both have over 90 receptions in 2019, which will make Tate a threat for 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns once again.
At 30 years of age, Tate is getting older, but we have seen with a player like Larry Fitzgerald that even older players can have success as a slot receiver. In the three seasons prior to the debacle in 2018 in Arizona, Fitzgerald recorded two seasons of 107 catches and another of 109. This is hopefully the type of season we can expect from Tate in 2019. If this happens, then a top-12 finish is possible. Even if the touchdowns don’t come, a top-24 season on a per-game basis is possible with his production level. His overall value is massively dented by the four-game suspension that has been upheld. He is still a player who can offer something in fantasy, but his already struggling value just got lower.
