DeSean Jackson Looks To Return To Relevance
6 years agoIn his first season in Tampa Bay, wide receiver DeSean Jackson was a disappointment due to inconsistent quarterback play as well as inconsistent play from Jackson himself. He comes in to 2018 looking to bounce back from a season in which he only caught 50 passes for 668 yards and three touchdowns. His 13.7 yards per catch was 3.6 yards less than his career average as his down field threat was nullified by the inaccuracy of Jameis Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick.
With Jameis Winston suspended for the first three games of the 2018 season, the outlook for Jackson a gain takes a dip as Fitzpatrick will utilize the tight end position as well as feeding Mike Evans. Along with this is the drafting of running back Ronald Jones, meaning the Buccaneers will look to run the ball much more this season. This will hurt in more ways than one as it will of course take targets away from Jackson. The Bucs will also need receivers who can block, which is not a high point of Jackson’s game, meaning he will be limited on run plays as other players like Chris Godwin and Adam Humphries, who are more physical, get more work. This season looks shaky again for Jackson and the Bucs in what is most likely his last season with the team.
With his move to the slot position to make room for second year receiver Chris Godwin on the outside, this could be a good thing or a bad thing all depending on how Jackson takes it. If he sees it as a slight, he will not excel. If he realizes it is something good, much like Larry Fitzgerald, it could extend his career by a couple of seasons. DeSean Jackson is still a valuable receiver for the Buccaneers, but less so for a fantasy team. Especially with Winston suspended for the beginning of the season, Jackson should be passed over in most drafts. Jackson should only be drafted if you want to take a last round flier or you are in a best ball league.
