Dellin Betances Still A Top Reliever
7 years agoWhile Dellin Betances remained a strikeout machine last year with the New York Yankees, one alarming statistic severely hampered his season. The 29-year-old’s 6.64 BB/9 number was the highest of his career. Despite his lowest total number of innings pitched since an abbreviated 2013 season, he walked his most batters ever. The problem took a toll on his first half of the season, as he posted a 3.18 ERA prior to the All-Star break. In the second half, however, he improved, as he posted a 2.59 ERA and walked eight fewer batters despite tossing three more innings. By the end of the season and postseason, Betances almost completely fell off the Yankees’ bullpen depth chart, not even being able to escape mop-up duty. Regardless, there are reasons to take another chance on the New York City native. He once again amassed double digit saves, recording 10. Should there be any injury to Aroldis Chapman, he once again seems poised to be the replacement. If he can work on lowering the walks, Betances is poised for fifth consecutive All-Star season.
