DeForest Buckner 2020 Outlook: Can New Surroundings Maximize His Talent?
5 years agoIndianapolis Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner once again made a fantasy impact in 2019. The former 49ers defensive lineman collected 62 tackles (34 solo), nine tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, two passes defended, two forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and a touchdown. These totals generated 156.2 points in IDP leagues, good for IDP71 overall and 11th among defensive lineman. Buckner has 19.5 sacks since 2018, fourth amongst interior defensive lineman in the NFL. An offseason trade sent the 26-year-old defensive tackle to Indianapolis for a first-round draft pick. Buckner will continue to be a three-technique in the Colts Defense, but he may find himself facing more attention from offensive lineman. The 49ers finished 2019 with 48 sacks, thanks to contributions from Arik Armstead (10.0), Nick Bosa (9.0), and Dee Ford (6.5). Teams were unable to consistently double team Buckner due to the variety of talented rushers on defense. In Indianapolis, the Colts' most prominent pass rusher is 31-year-old Justin Houston. While Houston did produce 11.0 sacks in 2020, the next highest total was linebacker Darius Leonard (5.0). Buckner is immensely talented and deserves to be one of the first defensive lineman drafted in IDP leagues but should continue to be drafted after most linebackers and safeties.
