Corey Seager 2021 Outlook: Beware Of Chasing 2020's Power Outbreak
4 years agoLos Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager had a significant power outbreak in 2020 and his fantasy owners loved everything about it. From 2017 through 2019, Seager never posted a slugging percentage above .483 and never registered a barrel rate above 8.5%. In 2020, Seager went on to slug .585 with a 15.8% barrel rate, which ranked amongst the top 5% of the league. He also had a ridiculous hard-hit rate of 55.9%, which ranked amongst the top 2% of the league and absolutely dwarfed his 2019 hard-hit rate of 38.2%. With 15 home runs and 41 RBI in 52 games last year, Seager was on a ridiculous 162-game pace of about 46 home runs and 127 RBI. He's never hit more than 26 home runs in a season and his career high in RBI is 87. Granted, he's had multiple seasons cut short by injuries, but last year remains a striking anomaly regardless. Seager is a career .295 hitter and he should be right around that mark in 2021. Expect him to hit around 25 home runs in 2021 if he can stay healthy but it's extremely risky to chase the power numbers he flashed in the shortened 2020 season. Don't reach for him in the second round, but if he's there in the late third and you haven't taken a shortstop yet, he's a solid target.
