Christian McCaffrey 2018 Outlook: All Floor, No Ceiling
6 years agoA lot of people were excited to see Christian McCaffrey last season. He was one of the most exciting players to watch while in college and everyone wanted to see if his skill set would translate to the NFL. One part of his game did translate and it allowed him to reach RB1 status. McCaffrey led all running backs last season with 113 targets and turned those into 80 receptions. Is there any room for growth in 2018 though?
The Panthers were not healthy last season and now that they will be getting back a couple of targets, plus the big addition in rookie D.J. Moore, the ceiling for McCaffrey has come down. Last season when Olsen was on the field, McCaffrey saw 2.4 less targets per game, two less receptions per game and seven less yards per game. You also must factor in little to no growth in the run game as Cam Newton will always take carries away from his running backs and the addition of C.J. Anderson shows the Panthers wanted to have insurance and were not ready to hand over full reigns of the backfield duties. In 2018, McCaffrey will have a nice floor and help as at least a low end RB2 in PPR, but the ceiling of a RB1 will disappear.
