Chris Hogan 2019 Outlook: 7-11 Might be Closing
5 years agoChris Hogan did not have a season to remember in 2018. With Julian Edelman missing the first four weeks, it was Hogan who was supposed to take a step up and keep the Patriots from falling flat. While New England surely did not fall flat, it was not because of Chris Hogan. After 35 receptions for 532 yards and three touchdowns, the Patriots decided to let the wide receiver go after the 2018 season. This has led to his arrival in Carolina for 2019.
Despite the team overall not being near as good, the offense may actually be better. This does not bode well for the production you can expect from Hogan this season. While last season he was only competing with Rob Gronkowski and eventually Julian Edelman. He has D.J. Moore, Curtis Samuel, and a hopefully healthy Gregg Olsen this season. And while James White is a very good pass catcher at running back, he pales in comparison to the skill of Christian McCaffrey, who led all running backs in receptions in 2018 with 112.
The other thing to worry about with Chris Hogan is the health of his quarterback. It looks as if Cam Newton is healthy, but we know Tom Brady was in 2018. If Newton has his shoulder issues flair up again, or he takes a big hit running and misses time, what can we expect from Will Greer? There will be targets to be had with the departure of Devin Funchess, but the return of Olsen to the offense as well as the possible emergence of Ian Thomas means there will not be as many as you would hope if you draft him. With D.J. Moore going in the fifth round of drafts at WR25 and Curtis Samuel going in the ninth round, there is not a whole lot of love for Hogan. Nor should there be.
For 2019. Hogan is no more than a waiver pick up in event of an injury to Moore or Samuel. He was unable to produce in New England after they signed him from Buffalo and this season will be no different. If you are in a 16-team league with deep benches? Sure, grab him late. But if you play in a standard 12-team league with normal-sized benches? Forget about him and move on to other players who have an easier path to relevance. A player like Devin Funchess or a player to really love, David Moore.
