Caleb Sturgis Proves It Wasn't Just the Holder
6 years agoLos Angeles Chargers kicker Caleb Sturgis was given the ultimate vote of confidence this week when head coach Anthony Lynn fired the team's punter over Sturgis' poor performance. After years of kicking woes, Lynn told reporters that surely all those kickers couldn't be that bad, and so he had fired the holder and brought in Donnie Jones, a 38-year-old punter who retired from the Eagles after last year's Super Bowl win. In his first week with the new holder, Sturgis reinforced that maybe the problem really wasn't the holder by going 2/3 on field goals and 2/3 on extra points. Sturgis has missed more extra points than any other kicker in the league, he's tied for worst extra point percentage, and he's tied for the eighth-worst field goal percentage. That said, he's also successfully kicked the eighth-most field goals this season, so fantasy owners may not care about his accuracy. The Chargers probably ought to though.
