Alex Reyes 2019 Outlook: Health Uncertainty Clouds Immense Upside
6 years agoAlex Reyes, the 24-year-old highly touted and hard-throwing right-hander was shut down in 2018 due to a right lat strain after throwing just four innings in the big leagues. Notably, Reyes had also missed all of 2017 due to a Tommy John procedure. He'll attempt to return to a starting role in 2019 following recent surgery to repair his right lat tendon. Reyes goes into 2019 as one of the biggest risks on the draft board considering the uncertainty of his role with St. Louis which is highly dependent on his rehab progression. Reyes' health will dictate his fantasy value by indicating whether he is able to start games or is kept in a bullpen role. As a starter, his current ADP of 175 is a value pick considering his immense upside. Throughout multiple levels of minor leagues before joining the major league club in 2018, Reyes pitched 22.3 innings posting 44 strikeouts without allowing an earned run. The savvy fantasy owner will keep in mind that it is likely that the Cardinals will at least limit his innings if put in a starting role to preserve their potential future pitching star, limiting his value. In a relief role, it would be easier to monitor his health and innings, but the 175 ADP will not hold its weight as he would not be expected to join the mix for closing opportunities.
