ANALYSIS: The Dallas Cowboys signed running back Javonte Williams in the offseason to lead the backfield after they let former 1,000-yard rusher Rico Dowdle sign with the Carolina Panthers.
In 2023, Williams served as the primary back in Denver but was inefficient, totaling just 513 yards on 139 attempts. He found the back of the end zone only four times. However, he was productive in the passing game, catching 52 passes for 346 yards. Despite this, he was very ineffective on the ground game, posting a low 3.7 YPC.
In Dallas, Williams expects to be the starting back over veteran Miles Sanders and rookie Jaydon Blue. While Blue could eventually carve out a role on the offense, he is currently dealing with an ankle injury and may be in danger of missing Week 1. Additionally, Sanders is managing a minor shoulder injury.
While this could leave Williams as the clear workhorse in their season opener against the Eagles, he is best left on the bench in standard 12-team leagues. The Eagles boast one of the sport's top defensive units and were elite at shutting down the run in 2024.
Fantasy managers should only consider starting Williams as a high-floor flex option/RB3 in deeper PPR leagues, as he could put up double-digit points if he were to be involved in the passing game.
