NHL DFS Picks for Saturday, December 19th
Welcome back for another night in daily fantasy hockey. With two games in the afternoon on Saturday, we are left with 8 games for the night slate in the NHL. It is shaping up to be a value kind of night with backups going in net and even a goalie making his first career start.
A couple strategy notes. For cash game construction look for players who can contribute to your score when they are not providing offense. Examples are guys who take a ton of shots, defensemen who block a lot of shots(DraftKings). Also, look for guys who get powerplay time and especially Top 6 forwards. You can find value in players who join a new line due to an injury or just get a promotion and more ice time.
For large field tournaments(GPP's) you want to find payers who have multi point upside and can grab double digit fantasy points. To stack the most upside in your forwards a common strategy is to punt the defense position. This doesn't mean just grab anyone. Try and look for a D man who will be playing more PP time or might get a boost in overall playing time due to an injury.
With that, let's dig in to find some core plays for Saturday night.
Jonathan Quick - Goaltender, Kings (DraftKings - $7,800 FanDuel - $8,900)
He is coming off a shutout of the Habs on Thursday and has recorded wins in eight of his last 10 games. He has pushed his record to 17-8-1 on the year with a .920 save percentage. The Kings travel to Toronto as favorites vs. the Leafs where Quick will be safe in all formats.
John Tavares - Center, Islanders (DraftKings - $7,800 FanDuel - $9,500)
To win large field tournaments you need one or two players who are very low owned with potential to blow up and have a giant game. Enter Tavares. He is an elite player who has been struggling mightily lately with only three points in his last 10 games. The cold streak has kept his salary affordable and below $8K on DraftKings. GPP play only.
Zach Parise - Winger, Wild (DraftKings - $7,700 FanDuel - $9,100)
He has been red hot since returning from injury and has picked up points in six of his last seven games for a total of 10 points. His salary has been climbing at a snails pace leaving plenty of value on Saturday in any format. If you are using him for GPP's stack Mikael Granlund and Jason Pominville in the same lineup.
Milan Lucic - Winger, Kings (DraftKings - $4,800 FanDuel - $6,800)
He was moved to a new line with Marian Gaborik and Anze Kopitar to try and spark some offense for the Kings. He picked up an assist in the game and now sits with 21 points on the season. The Kings will travel to Toronto as favorites on Saturday against the Leafs who Lucic has scored more points on than any other team in his career.
Ryan Suter - Defense, Wild (DraftKings - $5,900 FanDuel - $4,200)
One of the top fantasy options on the point, especially on FanDuel where he is a must play and extremely under priced. He has 24 points on the season and adds peripheral stats(blocks, shots) to raise his value.
