DJ LeMahieu Demoted to Bench Role
Jazz Chisholm Jr. moving from third base to second, the team is demoting fellow infielder DJ LeMahieu to the bench, manager Aaron Boone announced. LeMahieu made his season debut May 13 after recovering from a calf injury and has since amassed a team-high 45 appearances at second base. However, the Yankees feel they're better off with Chisholm manning the keystone. LeMahieu has past third base experience, but Boone said that the Yankees aren't planning to use him there anymore because it's too much of "a challenge" for the 36-year-old. As a result, he's unlikely to see much playing time going forward and may not be long for the roster. The two-time batting champion has hit .266/.338/.336 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 142 plate appearances this season. While LeMahieu is a better hitter than Oswald Peraza, the latter is vastly superior at third base and will take over as the Yankees' starter at the position for now. The Yankees are likely to acquire help at third before the July 31 trade deadline, meaning Peraza should shift back to a reserve role soon.
