Fantasy Football Matchup Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 16:
Michael Wilson, WR, Arizona Cardinals
Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson was still leading off individual drills in Thursday's practice despite the return of Marvin Harrison Jr. (heel), according to Arizona Sports' Tyler Drake. All four of Wilson's games this year with double-digit targets have come with Harrison sitting out due to injuries in the last five weeks. The one game sandwiched in between on Nov. 30 saw Wilson catch just three of seven targets for 36 yards.
It's reasonable for fantasy managers to wonder if Wilson will be a dud in Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons if Harrison makes his return to the lineup. The 25-year-old Wilson will definitely lose out on some targets if Harrison is active this Sunday after returning to practice this week, but he should still be at least a WR2 for fantasy managers in the Cardinals' pass-heavy attack. In the last two weeks, Wilson has caught 16 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns on 27 targets.
Woody Marks, RB, Houston Texans
Houston Texans running back Woody Marks (ankle) was set up for success last week, but he was forced to leave the game after just seven carries. If he does play, he'll be a strong option against the Raiders, but the Texans will be cautious with their rookie rusher. Last week, before his injury, he ran for 30 yards and caught his only target for eight yards. He still had a decent fantasy day since he had a touchdown on what was called a fumble recovery rather than a carry, when a goal-line snap went through C.J. Stroud's legs straight to Marks.
Marks didn't practice at all on Wednesday or Thursday, but was able to get a limited session on Friday before earning his questionable tag. If he plays, he'll be a solid RB2, since he's ranked as the RB No. 17 in RotoBaller's rankings. The Raiders have allowed 16 running back touchdowns on the season, including seven in the last four games, so whoever gets the work in Houston's backfield should be in position for a strong showing on Sunday.
Aaron Jones Sr., RB, Minnesota Vikings
As the Minnesota Vikings' offense has looked markedly improved during the past two weeks, an increased commitment to the running game offers great potential for running back Aaron Jones Sr. in Week 16 against the New York Giants. The Vikings ran the ball on nearly 57% of snaps the past two games, did damage with play-fakes, and saw quarterback J.J. McCarthy play his best football of the year. Jones has 15 touches in back-to-back weeks, which could mean good things against a Giants defense that ranks dead last in yards per carry allowed.
Additionally, New York ranks a lowly 30th against half-PPR running backs and has allowed the fifth-most rushing touchdowns, presenting a terrific matchup at a great time for managers who roster the veteran running back. Jones can be considered a solid RB2 with the potential for more in Week 16.
DeVonta Smith, WR, Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith tied his lowest target count in a game this season against the Raiders, mustering just two looks. He was not alone, however, as only one Philly player (Dallas Goedert) achieved more than three targets in the runaway victory. Plus, Smith was able to make the most of his little involvement, tallying 50 yards on two catches. Coming up, he'll face off against a Commanders defense that has been weak against the pass this season.
In fact, Washington has allowed more than 300 passing yards in three of their last six outings. However, Smith has not dazzled recently, having failed to find the end zone since Week 10 and tallying more than four receptions in a game just twice in that same span. In what could be another game where Philly doesn't need to rely on throwing the ball, Smith may be outcasted yet again. The defensive matchup is favorable, but his involvement is no guarantee. Consider him a low-end WR3/FLEX this week.
David Montgomery, RB, Detroit Lions
Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery enters his Week 16 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers on a hot streak, as he's recorded a rushing touchdown in three straight contests. However, Montgomery's recent usage paints a more worrying picture for his production. The 28-year-old has recorded double-digit touches just once in his last five games, and he's played fewer than 40% of the Lions' offensive snaps in six out of the last seven contests.
Montgomery's limited workload makes him highly dependent on touchdowns for fantasy production, which may be hard to come by against Pittsburgh. Entering Week 16, the Steelers defense has allowed just 10 rushing touchdowns on the season, which ranks tied for fifth-fewest in the NFL. Montgomery profiles as a low-end flex option for fantasy managers in Week 16.
