Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Outlooks
Sterling Shepard, WR, Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Sterling Shepard should be in line for an increase in workload moving forward, with Mike Evans (hamstring), Chris Godwin (fibula), Bucky Irving (shoulder/foot), Jalen McMillan (neck), and now Emeka Egbuka (hamstring) all injured and expected to miss some time.
Shepard remains one of the few healthy Buccaneer receivers, and his competition for targets includes rookie Tez Johnson, Cade Otton, and Kameron Johnson. Shepard is the most proven and experienced in that pass-catching room, and heading into what is expected to be a high-scoring affair against the Detroit Lions (53.5 point total according to sportsbooks), should be a solid low-end WR2 play and prioritized on the waiver wires this week.
Luke McCaffrey, WR, Commander
Washington Commanders wide receiver Luke McCaffrey has scored in three of his last four games and is emerging as a much-needed playmaker in a banged-up Washington WR room. McCaffrey has only eight receptions on the season, but three of them have gone for touchdowns, and one went for 50 yards on an outstanding catch and beautiful deep ball from Jayden Daniels.
McCaffrey's season high for route share was 43.5% back in Week 3, and he hasn't been higher than 40% since then. With Terry McLaurin (quadriceps) out for his fourth straight game and Deebo Samuel Sr. (heel) uncertain for Sunday, McCaffrey could see a bump in routes and targets in Week 7 against Dallas.
It'd be an ideal spot for McCaffrey to get more run, as the Dallas defense has been abysmal against opposing wide receivers, allowing the most PPR points per game. McCaffrey would be a player to consider plugging in for Samuel if he is unable to go.
Elic Ayomanor, WR, Titans
Tennessee Titans wide receiver Elic Ayomanor is expected to handle an increased workload against the New England Patriots in Week 7 after Calvin Ridley (hamstring) was ruled out for the contest. Ridley missed most of last week's game, too, and Ayomanor benefited, catching three passes for 27 yards on a season-high 93 percent snap share.
The catch total was nothing special, but that large snap share indicates that Ayomanor is on the field for almost every play, and that his target share should start to increase as a result. The Patriots have allowed the 13th-most fantasy points to wide receivers this season, leaving Ayomanor in the WR3/flex range.
Tez Johnson, WR, Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie wide receiver Tez Johnson has been trending up the last two weeks with five receptions, 104 yards, and a touchdown on seven targets with Mike Evans (hamstring) and Chris Godwin (leg) sidelined. Fellow rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka (hamstring) was also injured in the Week 6 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Although Johnson only caught one pass (on three targets) on Sunday, he played a season-high 72% of the offensive snaps and made his one reception count with a 45-yard touchdown, his first in the NFL. Evans could return on Monday against the Detroit Lions for the first time since straining his hamstring, but Egbuka and Godwin are expected to be inactive.
It means that the speedy 23-year-old Johnson could feature more again in Tampa's pass-heavy offense as a deep threat for quarterback Baker Mayfield against a depleted Lions secondary. Johnson is setting up as a boom/bust flex option in Week 7 in deeper fantasy leagues.
Kameron Johnson, WR, Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon said that WR Kameron Johnson "has the physical tools and brightness to go in and play several spots," according to the Pewter Report. The Buccaneers have "all the confidence putting him in games."
They feel that Johnson is just scratching the surface and can "make people miss when he has the ball in his hands." The 23-year-old had a career-best performance in the team's Week 6 win over the San Francisco 49ers, catching all four of his targets for 64 yards and a touchdown.
Mike Evans (hamstring) and Chris Godwin (leg) were already out, and then rookie Emeka Egbuka (hamstring) went down with an injury on Sunday. Johnson played almost 50% of the offensive snaps, and a bigger role should await him on Monday night against the Detroit Lions, with Godwin and Egbuka unlikely to play. He will be in play as a WR streamer in Week 7, especially if Evans misses another contest.
