The Texas Rangers optioned third baseman Josh Jung to Triple-A. Will Jung return to the major leagues this season? Who will cover third base in Texas?
Before their contest on Wednesday evening, the Texas Rangers opted to demote All-Star third baseman Josh Jung to Triple-A Round Rock.
This transaction opened a spot on the MLB roster for infielder Jake Burger, who was activated off the 10-day injured list.
Will Jung return to Texas later this season? Or will he need an extended stint in the minor leagues to find his swing?

Rangers Demote Former All-Star Third Baseman
The Rangers selected Jung with the ninth overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft out of Texas Tech. Jung made his MLB debut in 2022 but only appeared in 26 games.
In 2023, the third baseman was given his first extended look in the majors and performed exceptionally well. Jung held a .266/.315/.467 slash en route to being named to the American League All-Star team. During this season, Jung hit 25 doubles and 23 long balls. In 2024, Jung battled a wrist injury, which limited him to only 46 games.
During this brief stint, he remained productive, posting a .264/.298/.421 line.
Jung was enjoying an impressive start ot the 2025 campaign, holding a .288/.337/.472 line with seven doubles, seen home runs, and three stolen bases through his first 45 games. However, over his last 30 contests, Jung posted an underwhelming .164/.205/.216 line.
While Jung attempts to find his swing in the minor leagues, Josh Smith and Ezequiel Duran should be given most of the opportunities at the hot corner in Texas. Fantasy managers should consider stashing Jung in all shallow leagues as he will likely remain in the minor leagues for at least the next few weeks.
However, managers in deeper formats should continue to stash Jung as he will still carry high power upside when he returns to Texas.
Josh Jung has been optioned to Triple-A Round Rock to work on his swing and approach. Tough break for a good kid. https://t.co/0fCitttesI
