New York Mets starting pitcher Steven Matz had his second consecutive solid outing on Friday night against the Philadelphia Phillies, but it remains tough to trust him moving forward. Matz allowed only one earned run on five hits and four walks across five innings pitched, striking out only three. The one earned run is nice, but a 1.80 WHIP with only three strikeouts and four walks isn’t doing anyone any favors. In most cases, those numbers would indicate a lot more Phillies crossing home plate. Plus, a lot of Matz’s value should be coming from his strikeouts. If he’s only going to punch out three, you’d be taking a high-risk/low-reward approach by starting Matz – the opposite of how you should be approaching fantasy baseball. Matz’s next start comes on Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, an outing you should be avoiding Matz for but definitely starting D-Backs.--John Smith
