Paul Goldschmidt Retreats to the Bench on Thursday
Paul Goldschmidt will start on the bench for Thursday's game in the Bronx against the visiting Cleveland Guardians. Ben Rice will start at first base and bat out of the two-hole against Guardians right-hander Slade Cecconi. Goldschmidt has been having a nice bounce-back season in his first year in pinstripes in 2025, but he'll take a seat after going 1-for-16 with a stolen base, walk and five strikeouts in his last four games played. The former MVP is hitting a strong .323 (72-for-223) on the season but has an xBA of .294, which means fantasy managers should expect some more regression as the season ages. The 37-year-old has added six home runs, 28 RBI, 38 runs scored and five stolen bases after showing signs of offensive decline in his last couple seasons with the Cardinals in 2023 and 2024.
