Paul Goldschmidt 2021 Player Outlook: Reliable And Steady First Base Target
4 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has proven to be a solid, albeit unspectacular fantasy producer over his two years in St. Louis. Goldschmidt, who turned 33 this past September, is no longer worth consideration in the first few rounds of drafts, but he's a reliable and consistent target to have your eye on at the start of the middle rounds. Goldschmidt slashed .304/.417/.466 with six home runs, 21 RBI and 31 runs over 58 games in 2020. Last year, he had a notable power drop off from 2019, when he hit 34 home runs. His home run to fly ball rate fell from 19.9% in 2019 to 10.7% in 2020. He also saw some slight decreases in his barrel-rate and hard-hit rate last year. However, he improved upon his plate discipline in 2020, lowering his strikeout rate from 24.3% in 2019 to 18.6% in 2020 while raising his batting average from .260 in 2019 to .304 last year. Goldschmidt should be able to provide sufficient numbers across the board in 2021 with a solid shot at reaching 30 home runs for the sixth time in his career. With first base being less stacked these days than in seasons prior, he provides an additional positional asset. Have him on your radar in the seventh round of drafts, especially if you're planning on taking some higher risk players with some earlier picks.
