Panthers Signing Cam Newton
3 years agoThe Carolina Panthers are signing former franchise quarterback Cam Newton to a one-year deal worth up to $10 million for the rest of the season after he met with the team's brass on Thursday. The deal includes $4.5 million fully guaranteed and a $1.5 million roster bonus. P.J. Walker is expected to start in Week 10 against the Arizona Cardinals with Matt Barkley backing him up, but the Panthers want another option for the starting gig with Sam Darnold (shoulder) out four to six weeks with a fractured scapula. The 32-year-old was the former first overall pick by Carolina in 2011 and could be the team's starter as early as Week 11 against the Washington Football Team. Newton threw for 2,657 yards on 368 attempts (65.8 completion percentage) with eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 15 games for the New England Patriots last year, adding 137 carries for 592 yards and 12 more TDs. For his rushing prowess alone, he'll be a better QB2 option than Darnold has been in his first year in Carolina.
