6 hours agoSan Francisco Giants left-hander Blake Snell (groin) threw a bullpen session at Oracle Park on Saturday and is expected to throw a three-inning simulated game in his next throwing session on Tuesday. Snell was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left-groin strain on June 3, a day after he exited in the middle of an at-bat in the fifth inning in his start against the New York Yankees. It's the second time Snell has been on the IL this year, as he also missed 25 games earlier this year with another left-groin strain in April. The reigning National League Cy Young winner signed with the Giants late and has had a miserable 2024 campaign to this point, going 0-3 with a 9.51 ERA and 1.94 WHIP with 31 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings over six starts. Still, the 31-year-old southpaw needs to be rostered in all fantasy leagues because of his elite strikeout upside when he's right.Source: MLB.com

6 hours agoSan Diego Padres right-hander Yu Darvish (groin) will make a minor-league rehab start with High-A Fort Wayne on Wednesday, according to manager Mike Shildt. Depending on how Darvish's groin feels on Wednesday, the 37-year-old veteran is a candidate to come off the 15-day injured list after just the one rehab start. Outside of already being on the injured list twice this year, the 37-year-old Japanese hurler has been quite good for the Friars, going 4-3 with a 3.20 ERA (3.51 FIP) and 1.06 WHIP with a 53:15 K:BB in 56 1/3 innings over his 11 starts. On the flip side, Darvish's strikeout rate (23.1%) is on the decline for the fourth straight season. In his last full start on May 24 against the Yankees, Darvish let up a season-high seven earned runs on nine hits in just 5 2/3 innings of work.Source: The Athletic - Dennis Lin
6 hours agoThe Philadelphia Phillies optioned outfielder Johan Rojas to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday and reinstated shortstop Trea Turner (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. Rojas could use some work in the minors after slashing .235/.271/.295 with two home runs, 19 RBI, 14 stolen bases, 21 runs scored, just seven walks and 31 strikeouts in 196 plate appearances in 58 games in his sophomore season for the Phillies. It's been a big step back offensively after he hit .302 in 59 games in his rookie year in 2023. The 23-year-old has a good chance to be back with the Phillies again this year, but for now, the team will go with a platoon in center field between Brandon Marsh and Cristian Pache, with Marsh seeing most of the starts against right-handed pitching.Source: Philadelphia Phillies
6 hours agoThe Cincinnati Reds transferred infielder Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist) to the 60-day injured list on Monday and selected the contract of right-hander Brooks Kriske from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move. Encarnacion-Strand is dealing with a right ulnar styloid fracture in his wrist and has been on the injured list since May 8. The 24-year-old isn't expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment anytime soon and has reportedly been considering having season-ending surgery to fix ligament damage. His rehab process was put on hold earlier this month after he sought a second opinion on his injury. Fantasy managers that have been stashing the power-hitting corner infielder should have a better idea later this week as to whether he'll have a shot to return in the second half of the season. CES was hitting just .190 (22-for-116) with two homers and 16 RBI at the time of his injury.Source: Cincinnati Reds
6 hours agoWashington Nationals outfield prospect Dylan Crews is being promoted to Triple-A Rochester this week, according to a source. Crews had been red-hot at Double-A Harrisburg and hit .274/.343/.446 with five home runs, 11 doubles, three triples, 38 RBI, 15 stolen bases and 26 runs scored overall in his 51 games played. The Nationals are rewarding the second overall pick from last year out of LSU after his 2024 campaign started off on the wrong foot due to a hamstring injury early on. The 22-year-old has since rebounded, though, and is now joining fellow top outfield prospect James Wood at Rochester. Since May 1, Crews hit .292 with three home runs and 13 stolen bases. While Wood is probably closer than Crews to a big-league promotion, it's not out of the question that Crews will make his major-league debut in D.C. later this year.Source: MLB Network Radio - Grant Paulsen
7 hours agoWashington Nationals outfield prospect James Wood (hamstring) is expected to start playing in games this week, according to a source. Wood has been sidelined since May 23 with right-hamstring tightness and was hitting an impressive .355 (59-for-166) with a 1.061 OPS, nine homers, 13 doubles, 31 RBI, 10 stolen bases and 39 runs scored in 45 games for Triple-A Rochester before his injury. The 21-year-old left-handed-hitting outfielder is considered the No. 4 overall prospect in baseball and is likely being stashed in the majority of all fantasy leagues despite the fact that he has yet to debut in the Show. As long as he doesn't get hurt again, Wood figures to earn his first big-league promotion at some point early in the second half of the season. In addition to his strong hitting line at Rochester this year, Wood also has a robust 17.4 percent walk rate in his 202 plate appearances.Source: The Washington Post - Andrew Golden
7 hours agoLos Angeles Angels right-hander Jose Soriano (abdomen) has been scratched from his scheduled start on Monday against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers due to abdominal pain. Right-hander Zach Plesac will now make the emergency spot start. We don't currently know the severity of Soriano's injury or whether he'll only miss just one turn through the Angels' rotation. The 25-year-old is now a candidate to land on the injured list if it's serious enough. The hard-throwing Dominican pitcher has been much better in his last two starts, giving up only four runs (three earned) while walking three and fanning six in 14 innings against the Padres and Diamondbacks to lower his season ERA to 3.48. This will be Plesac's first big-league start in 2024 after recording a 5.42 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 51 K's in 74 2/3 innings in 13 starts for Triple-A Salt Lake. Plesac won't be a recommended streamer on Monday.Source: The Athletic - Sam Blum
7 hours agoLos Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that shortstop Mookie Betts (wrist) is expected to miss six to eight weeks after fracturing his left wrist on a hit-by-pitch on Sunday in the series finale against the Kansas City Royals. The Dodgers officially placed Betts on the 10-day injured list on Monday and recalled outfielder Miguel Vargas from the minors in a corresponding move. If Betts heals faster than expected, there's a chance that he could be back within six weeks, but that remains to be seen. In the meantime, fantasy managers need to keep the superstar stashed in all formats. With the 31-year-old All-Star sidelined, veteran Miguel Vargas will take over starting duties at shortstop in LA. Rojas has hit a respectable .278 (30-for-108) this year, but he offers limited counting-stat upside, even in a potent Dodgers lineup.Source: MLB.com - Juan Toribio

7 hours agoNew York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo (arm) suffered a fracture to the radial neck of his right arm on Sunday against the division-rival Boston Red Sox but will not need surgery, according to a person with knowledge of the injury. Still, Rizzo could miss anywhere from four to six weeks. It's unclear what the Yankees will do with Rizzo on the shelf, but it seems likely that they will move third baseman DJ LeMahieu to first base and give utility man Oswaldo Cabrera most of the playing time at third base. The injury occurred when Rizzo collided with Boston reliever Brennan Berardino while running down the line to beat out a ground ball. The 34-year-old three-time All-Star has mostly struggled at the plate this year for the Bombers, hitting only .223 (59-for-264) with eight homers and 28 RBI. Cabrera will be a popular waiver-wire pickup in deeper fantasy leagues.Source: The Athletic - Ken Rosenthal, Brendan Kuty and Chris Kirschner
7 hours agoColorado Rockies second baseman Brendan Rodgers (hamstring) was out at Coors Field on Monday doing a full day of baseball activities before the series opener against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rockies are still deciding if Rodgers will go on a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque before he is reinstated from the injured list. Once he returns from the IL, rookie infielder Adael Amador is likely to head back to Double-A Hartford to continue his development. The 27-year-old Rodgers is eligible to come off the 10-day IL on Tuesday, but it remains to be seen if that will happen. Either way, he's close to rejoining Colorado as their everyday second baseman. The former first-rounder is having one of his better seasons in the big leagues to this point with a .275 average, three home runs, 22 RBI and 24 runs scored in 59 games.Source: DNVR Sports - Patrick Lyons
7 hours agoColorado Rockies outfielder Brenton Doyle (knee) is starting in center field and is batting leadoff for the Rockies on Monday for the series opener against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers and left-hander James Paxton. Left-patellar tendonitis kept Doyle out the last two games, but he's feeling better now and is ready to roll to start the new week. The 26-year-old should be returned to starting fantasy lineups against a vulnerable left-hander while batting out of the leadoff spot. Doyle is hitting .268 (64-for-239) with five homers, 19 RBI and 18 stolen bases in his 67 games in 2024 after hitting just .203 with 10 homers and 22 steals in 126 games in his first year in the big leagues in 2023. Doyle has yet to homer against a southpaw this year, but he's gone 14-for-51 (.275) against them and is hitting over .300 in the last two weeks.Source: MLB.com
8 hours agoArizona Diamondbacks shortstop prospect Jordan Lawlar (hamstring) is expected to miss an extended period of time after suffering an injury during Saturday's game with Triple-A Reno. The 21-year-old underwent an MRI on Sunday to determine the severity of the injury. It's not good news as it appears Lawlar has suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain. The current timetable for Lawlar is 4-to-6 weeks. This obviously doesn't impact the current D-Backs roster but this is a bummer considering Lawlar is one of the top prospects in the game right now.Source: AZ Central
