15 hours agoFree-agent shortstop Nick Ahmed signed a minor-league deal with the San Francisco Giants on Monday. The deal includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Ahmed and long-time Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford battled for the National League Gold Glove at the 6 for a while, with Ahmed winning it in 2018-19 while playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 33-year-old veteran will give the Giants a backup option to rookie Marco Luciano at shortstop in 2024. Ahmed really struggled at the plate in his 10th season in the desert last year, slashing just .212/.257/.303 with two home runs, 17 RBI, five stolen bases and 14 runs scored in 72 games played before he was released in September. Unless Luciano misses extended time with an injury, Ahmed isn't going to be attractive in many fantasy leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Andrew Baggarly

15 hours agoThe St. Louis Cardinals signed free-agent shortstop Brandon Crawford to an undisclosed deal on Monday, according to league sources. The three-time All-Star with the San Francisco Giants is expected to serve as the backup to 21-year-old rookie shortstop Masyn Winn while the team awaits further clarity on Tommy Edman's recovery from wrist surgery. Crawford spent the previous 13 seasons in the Bay Area, playing a key role in the team's 2012 and 2014 World Series championships. He was an All-Star as recently as 2021, but his performance started to decline in 2022, and he appeared in just 93 games last year due to various injuries and finished with a meager .194/.273/.314 slash line. The 37-year-old is a good defender but can't be counted on for offensive production at this point, and the 2024 season could easily be Crawford's last as a pro.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Katie Woo

15 hours agoFree-agent infielder/outfielder Enrique Hernandez signed an undisclosed one-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. The 32-year-old Puerto Rican utility man began the 2023 season with the Boston Red Sox before finishing the year in LA. In total, he hit .237/.289/.357 with 11 home runs, 23 doubles, 61 RBI, four stolen bases and 57 runs scored in 140 games played. He'll basically take the place of Manuel Margot, who was traded to the Minnesota Twins on Monday, as a reserve outfielder for the Dodgers in 2024. But Hernandez can also fill in where needed on the infield. Although he had double-hernia surgery last October, he's expected to be ready for Opening Day. Because Hernandez won't be an everyday player on a stacked Dodgers roster, he shouldn't attract much attention in mixed fantasy leagues this year.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: New York Post - Jon Heyman

15 hours agoCleveland Guardians catching prospect Bo Naylor (back) was scratched from the team's Cactus League lineup on Monday against the San Diego Padres due to back spasms. The Guardians are probably just being cautious with the young catching prospect early in spring training, but we'll have more updates on the 24-year-old backstop's condition once we know more. He's likely to be day-to-day. Naylor took over in Cleveland last year during the summer and hit .237/.339/.470 with an .809 OPS, 11 home runs, 32 RBI and five stolen bases in 67 games in 2023. Naylor, the younger brother of Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor, will be the team's starting catcher from the get-go in 2024. If he stays healthy and gets enough playing time, he has the potential to be a top-10 catcher in fantasy when all is said and done, mainly due to his speed.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Paul Hoynes
Share:
15 hours agoArizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas (wrist) is dealing with wrist soreness that kept him out of the team's Cactus League lineup on Monday. He has been tracking pitches during live batting practice sessions without swinging in the meantime, and manager Torey Lovullo said the concern is minimal and that Thomas could have played on Monday, if needed. It sounds as though the 23-year-old center fielder should be back in spring training action by the end of the week, if not sooner, and he'll be good to go for Opening Day in late March. Thomas struggled at the plate in 125 games for the D-backs last year, slashing .230/.273/.374 with nine home runs, 39 RBI and nine steals and was demoted to the minors in the first half. Unless he improves against left-handers, he probably isn't going to be much of an asset in shallow mixed leagues in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Arizona Sports - Alex Weiner

16 hours agoArizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll made his spring debut on Saturday during a 6-2 Cactus League win over the Colorado Rockies. The reigning NL Rookie of the Year was not a factor, however, going hitless in two at-bats and drawing a walk in his third plate appearance. He was then taken out for a pinch runner. One spring training game does not a season make, however, and Carroll figures to be one of the top offensive weapons in all of real-life and fantasy baseball this season. The former first-round draft pick will look to build upon his 2023 All-Star campaign after he tallied a .285-25-76-116-54 line in 155 games. Carroll is ranked fifth overall at RotoBaller and is being taken around the same pick in 2024 fantasy drafts. At that pick, managers have to decide whether they want the HR/RBI upside of Mookie Betts or lower (yet respectable) totals in those categories from Carroll but with 40 more stolen bases than the Los Angeles Dodger second baseman.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBallerSource: ESPN

17 hours agoAtlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson made his spring debut on Sunday in a 5-4 Grapefruit League loss to the Boston Red Sox. Last year's MLB home run leader drew a walk on four pitches in his first at-bat, then took a swing at the first pitch he saw in the next at-bat which resulted in a rare infield single for the plodding slugger. The 2x All-Star had a career year in 2023, putting up a .283-54-139-127-1 line and allowing Braves fans to firmly put the days of Freddie Freeman in the rearview mirror. The 2023 Silver Slugger Award winner has played all 162 games his first two seasons in Atlanta and another 40 home run, 100 RBI, and 100 runs scored campaign should be in the offing in 2024. Olson is rightfully the second first baseman off the board in drafts as he won't help in the stolen base category (unlike the aforementioned Freddie Freeman), but is a rock-solid second-round pick for fantasy.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBallerSource: ESPN

18 hours agoThe Los Angeles Dodgers have traded outfielder Manuel Margot to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for shortstop Noah Miller. At this time, it's unclear who the Dodgers have received in return. It was certainly a short tenure for Margot in the Dodgers organization after the club acquired him as part of the trade that also landed them right-hander Tyler Glasnow on Dec. 15. The veteran hit .264 with four home runs and nine stolen bases in a platoon role in Tampa Bay last season, appearing in just 99 games and fewer than 100 contests for the second straight season. He could be deployed similarly with the Twins in 2024 as he should take over right field from the lefty-swinging Max Kepler versus left-handed pitching.--Brenton Kemp - RotoBallerSource: Juan Toribio
Share:
18 hours agoMiami Marlins pitcher Eury Perez is trying out a new curveball grip that he and pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre have come up with in spring training. Perez noted the curveball looks good in bullpen sessions, but he needs to trust it more. The towering 6-foot-8 righty made his big-league debut at just 20 years of age in the 2023 season and worked to a 3.15 ERA across 19 starts, but the club limited his workload after throwing just 77 innings in the minors in the 2022 season. Perez should be given a much longer leash in the 2024 season, especially with ace Sandy Alcantara (elbow) out for the season due to Tommy John surgery. He is certainly worth an investment on draft day and is a dynasty league gem moving forward.--Brenton Kemp - RotoBallerSource: Christina De Nicola
Share:
18 hours agoDetroit Tigers pitcher Jack Flaherty worked a perfect inning in his spring debut with the team on Monday versus the Houston Astros. The veteran was brought into Detroit on a one-year, $14 million deal this offseason after he struggled between the Cardinals and Orioles in the 2023 campaign. The 28-year-old posted a 4.99 ERA across 29 outings (27 starts) but struggled mightily following a trade-deadline deal to the O's where he posted a 6.75 ERA in 34 2/3 innings of work. However, the 2023 season was also his healthiest full campaign since 2019, and he will get a shot at taking the ball every fifth day with the Tigers in 2024. He could be a solid late-round sleeper as he posted a 3.22 ERA as recently as the 2021 season and is coming off his first healthy offseason in some time.--Brenton Kemp - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com
Share:
18 hours agoSeattle Mariners right-hander Gregory Santos (lat) will begin his throwing program on Tuesday. The 24-year-old was acquired this offseason in a trade with the Chicago White Sox after he impressed in 60 appearances on the south side in his rookie campaign in 2023. Santos worked to a 3.39 ERA in his 66 1/3 innings of work but also posted a 2.65 FIP and allowed just two home runs on the season while posting a tiny 0.27 HR/9 clip. The Mariners have Andres Munoz and Matt Brash as the key late-inning arms at the back end of their bullpen, meaning Santos' chances at saves and holds could be limited. He is best left off the fantasy radar barring a notable injury to either Munoz or Brash.--Brenton Kemp - RotoBallerSource: Ryan Divish
Share:
18 hours agoFree-agent reliever Matt Barnes' market is heating up, as the Washington Nationals are one club that is linked to him. The right-hander underwent offseason surgery on his hip but threw for interested clubs in late January and appears ready to join a big-league spring training camp soon. It was a tough 2023 season for the 33-year-old who dealt with both injuries and inconsistency as he posted a 5.48 ERA across 24 outings. However, he also posted a 4.15 FIP and 4.35 SIERA, suggesting he was better than his surface ERA might suggest. Once a staple in the Red Sox bullpen, Barnes owns a career 4.13 ERA across 453 appearances while boasting an impressive 29.4% K%, although that figure has hovered around just 20% in each of the last two seasons.--Brenton Kemp - RotoBallerSource: Chris Cotillo
Share:
18 hours agoThe St. Louis Cardinals and free-agent shortstop Brandon Crawford could be nearing an agreement, per the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser. The long-time Giants infielder's tenure with the club all be ended on Monday when the team agreed to a contract with veteran shortstop Nick Ahmed. After exploding for an MVP-caliber 2021 season, it has been a struggle at the plate for Crawford over the last two seasons. Most recently, he hit .94 with seven home runs, three stolen bases, and a .587 OPS across just 94 games last season, production that graded out 37% below the league average, as per his 63 wRC+. He has spent all 13 of his big-league seasons with the Giants.--Brenton Kemp - RotoBallerSource: Susan Slusser

19 hours agoAfter flying out to right in his first at-bat in Sunday's 5-4 Grapefruit League loss to the Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley hit a Joe Jacques pitch off the pavilion in right field for his first hit and home run of the spring. It was a solo shot for the 2x All-Star, ending the day 1-2 with one RBI and one run scored. Riley hit 37 long balls last season and with the slugger projected for 38 again in 2024, he's in prime position to rack up RBIs hitting out of the third spot in the potent Braves batting order. The former first-round pick won't help you in the stolen base department but will provide stellar production in every other meaningful category. He's also durable, playing nearly 160 games in three consecutive seasons, which helps affirm his status as the second third baseman off of draft boards and his ranking of 19th overall at RotoBaller, just ahead of his NFBC ADP of 20th overall.--Jarod Rupp - RotoBallerSource: ESPN
Share:
19 hours agoTexas Rangers outfielder Evan Carter (forearm) faced right-hander Jon Gray in an intrasquad game in camp on Monday and looks to be swinging the bat fine. Carter was hit by a pitch on his left forearm in the Cactus League game on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants and left the game early as a precaution. X-rays came back negative on the 21-year-old lefty hitter, though, and he's already back to swinging a bat. The injury was not serious, and Carter should return to Cactus League games before the end of the week. He should be just fine for Opening Day in late March. As a young outfielder with 25-stolen base potential over a full season while hitting near the top of a strong lineup in Texas, Carter has plenty of fantasy appeal as a No. 2/3 outfielder heading into his first full season in the majors.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Kennedi Landry
