2 weeks agoSt. Louis Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras (hand) was removed from Tuesday's game early against the Baltimore Orioles after the fifth inning due to a right-hand contusion and was replaced behind the plate by Andrew Knizner. Before leaving, Contreras went 1-for-2 with a run scored at the plate. It's unclear what caused the injury, and fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day until we know more. The 31-year-old Venezuelan backstop came into Tuesday's game hitting .261 (108-for-414) with 19 home runs, 66 RBI, six stolen bases and 53 runs scored in 120 games (477 plate appearances) in his first year in St. Louis. If Contreras misses extended time, Knizner will become St. Louis' primary catcher.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Lynn Worthy

2 weeks agoSt. Louis Cardinals infielder Nolan Gorman (hamstring) was pulled from Tuesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles with right-hamstring tightness. Gorman has had his issues staying on the field regularly in his second major-league season and has also dealt with back problems. When healthy, though, he's been relevant in all fantasy leagues with a .235/.326/.477 slash line, .803 OPS, 27 home runs, 17 doubles, 76 RBI, seven stolen bases and 59 runs scored in 463 plate appearances and 118 games. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now, but be aware that this could turn into a stint on the injured list. Before leaving the contest, he went 0-for-1. If Gorman is forced to miss extended time with this injury, Tommy Edman would see the majority of playing time at the keystone.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Lynn Worthy

2 weeks agoThe Arizona Diamondbacks recalled outfielder Jake McCarthy from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. McCarthy isn't in the starting lineup on Tuesday night against the New York Mets, but he'll provide the Snakes with some extra outfield depth down the stretch as they look to hang onto the final wild-card spot in the National League. The 26-year-old left-handed hitter and thrower struggled in his time with Arizona over 86 games before being sent down, hitting .245/.325/.331 with only two home runs, 14 RBI, 26 stolen bases and 33 runs scored in 291 plate appearances. However, he was tearing the cover off the ball at Reno in 45 games and could provide fantasy managers with some stolen bases in deeper leagues to close out the 2023 season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Arizona Sports - John Gambadoro

2 weeks agoMilwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Adrian Houser (elbow) is set to be activated from the 15-day injured list and start against the Miami Marlins on Thursday. The right-hander has been sidelined since late August due to elbow swelling. Before that, Houser held a 4.58 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and 77/28 K/BB ratio over 19 games (17 starts) with the Brewers this season. Prior to this news, Wade Miley was expected to pitch on Thursday, so it's unclear how the Brewers will shake up their rotation. For now, Houser is scheduled to pitch on Thursday, so fantasy managers can expect him to take the mound for that contest.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: Adam McCalvy

2 weeks agoLos Angeles Dodgers outfielder David Peralta (elbow) is back in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the San Diego Padres. The veteran outfielder missed Monday's game after getting hit by a pitch in the elbow during Sunday's contest. Luckily, the X-rays came back negative, so it appears Peralta avoided serious injury. He appears ready to go on Tuesday after an extra day off to rest. He'll bat sixth and play left field versus right-hander Michael Wacha on Tuesday. Fantasy managers should adjust their lineups accordingly with Peralta back.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

2 weeks agoNew York Yankees outfielder/designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton is out of the starting lineup for the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Boston Red Sox. The veteran slugger went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts during the first game of the day. After that, the Yankees decided to give me a breather and let him have the night off. Aaron Judge will serve as the designated hitter, while Oswaldo Cabrera starts in right field versus right-hander Kutter Crawford on Tuesday.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com
Share:
2 weeks agoChicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong made his big league debut against the Colorado Rockies on Monday. The top prospect came off the bench during Monday's win, but will now make his first career start in the big leagues. The 21-year-old will cover center field and bat eighth versus right-hander Chris Flexen on Tuesday. Crow-Armstrong was swinging the bat well in the minors, so hopefully he'll be an immediate impact player for the Cubs. He has the potential to be an five-tool everyday player at the major league level.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com
Share:
2 weeks agoChicago Cubs infielder Jeimer Candelario (back) has been placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday. This news comes after Candelario suffered a back strain during Sunday's series finale versus the Arizona Diamondbacks. As a result, Candelario will be sidelined until at least next Thursday. Nick Madrigal is expected to see more playing time at third base, while Cody Bellinger should get some action at first base. The Cubs have also recalled outfielder Alexander Canario as extra depth.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: Meghan Montemurro
Share:
2 weeks agoLos Angeles Angels infielder Brandon Drury is out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Seattle Mariners. This doesn't appear to be injury related, so fantasy managers can assume his absence is for rest purposes. Drury has struggled lately, going 2-for-21 over his last five games. He'll get a chance to rest and hopefully get back on track. In his absence, Eduardo Escobar will cover second base and bat fifth versus right-hander Bryan Woo on Tuesday.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com
Share:
2 weeks agoLos Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (elbow, oblique) remains out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Seattle Mariners. Ohtani was slated to return on Monday, but was scratched ahead of the contest. The 29-year-old will miss Tuesday's game as well, which makes nine straight games that Ohtani has sat out. The team continues to list Ohtani as day-to-day, but it seems increasingly likely that he'll head to the injured list. Matt Thaiss will bat sixth and serve as the designated hitter versus right-hander Bryan Woo on Tuesday.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com
Share:
2 weeks agoMilwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich (back) remains out of the starting lineup on Tuesday against the visiting Miami Marlins. Yelich will miss his fourth straight game while dealing with back stiffness, but fantasy managers should continue to consider him day-to-day for now. Sal Frelick is in center field and leading off, Mark Canha is in left field and batting cleanup, and Tyrone Taylor is in right field and hitting in the nine-hole against Marlins right-hander JT Chargois. The 31-year-old Yelich is having a fine 2023 season, slashing .274/.363/.435 with 17 home runs, 31 doubles, a triple, 70 RBI, 27 stolen bases and 97 runs scored in 597 plate appearances over 136 games. His back injury may be the reason why he's gone only 7-for-46 (.152) with a homer, a double, three RBI, 20 strikeouts and nine runs in 13 games (12 starts) since Aug. 25.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com

2 weeks agoToronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman (finger) is going through a full day of baseball activities on Tuesday, including hitting off a velocity machine. The hope is that he will return from the injured list later this week. When Chapman returns to the big-league roster, he'll return to regular duties at the hot corner, moving Santiago Espinal and Cavan Biggio back to bench roles in Toronto. In his second year with the Jays, Chapman has hit .248/.338/.431 with 15 home runs, 36 doubles, a triple, 50 RBI, three stolen bases and 61 runs scored in 520 trips to the plate and 125 games. He's been slightly disappointing from a power perspective after clubbing 27 home runs each of the previous two seasons in Oakland and Toronto.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Sportsnet.ca - Shi Davidi

2 weeks agoThe New York Mets are hiring David Stearns as their new president of baseball operations, according to sources familiar with the situation. Stearns is a monumental addition to the organization, and the 38-year-old will take over officially at the end of the 2023 season. He has been the architect of multiple National League Central titles for the Milwaukee Brewers and was long rumored to take over the Mets after stepping down as the Brewers' president after last year. Stearns will officially begin his five-year deal in October. He's a New York native who grew up as a Mets fan, and he'll have seemingly limitless resources of owner Steve Cohen to make the team better in Queens. Billy Eppler will remain as general manager and serve as the No. 2 to Stearns.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Jeff Passan

2 weeks agoThe New York Yankees claimed right-hander Luke Weaver off waivers from the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday and moved left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. The Mariners designated Weaver for assignment last weekend after he allowed nine earned runs on 16 hits (two homers) while walking three and striking out eight in 13 1/3 innings over five outings (one start) for them. The 30-year-old has posted a rough 6.77 ERA (5.75 FIP), 1.61 WHIP, 37 walks and 93 strikeouts in 110 1/3 innings over 26 appearances (22 starts) for the M's and Cincinnati Reds in 2023, so he's basically been well off the fantasy radar all year.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: New York Post - Greg Joyce
Share:
2 weeks agoThe San Diego Padres put left-hander Rich Hill on waivers on Tuesday to see if another team will pick him up for the last few weeks of the regular season, according to a source. If nobody comes calling, he'll remain with the Padres for the rest of the year. The 43-year-old just hasn't been good in 29 appearances (27 saves) for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Padres in 2023, so there's a good chance he'll go unclaimed. The 43-year-old southpaw was acquired from Pittsburgh in a trade in early August, and he's been even worse in his time in San Diego, giving up 25 runs (23 earned) on 31 hits (eight home runs) while walking 10 and striking out 19 in 22 1/3 innings over seven outings (five starts). Hill is well over the hill and doesn't appear to have much left in his career.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: New York Post - Joel Sherman
