2 weeks agoBaltimore Orioles left-hander John Means (elbow) said it's "probably unlikely" he'll be built up in time to be a part of the team's Opening Day starting rotation. Means is disappointed, but he's confident in his teammates to have early success in 2024. The O's will also be without Kyle Bradish (elbow) to start the year, as he's dealing with a sprained UCL. Means and the Orioles are still hoping he can make his season debut in April, though, but his exact timetable isn't very clear just yet. The 30-year-old had a setback with his surgically repaired left elbow last October and is roughly about a month behind the team's other starters. Means was an All-Star in 2019 but has made only six starts in the last two years and can be left to the waiver wire to begin 2024 in most mixed leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Jake Rill

2 weeks agoBaltimore Orioles right-hander Kyle Bradish (elbow) is "very confident" he'll get past his right UCL sprain and pitch for the team in 2024. Bradish is scheduled to throw on Friday for the first time since receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow. The 27-year-old is going to open the 2024 regular season on the injured list, but the hope right now is that he'll eventually be able to recover through rest and rehab and can avoid having Tommy John surgery, which would wipe out his entire season. He was a breakout performer for Baltimore in 2023, posting a 2.83 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 168 strikeouts and 44 walks in 30 starts (168 2/3 innings), but his injury to begin this season puts him off the fantasy radar in shallow mixed leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Jake Rill

2 weeks agoBaltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson (oblique) said the oblique soreness he's dealing with is on his left side and he felt it during long toss. However, he's not concerned about it and said he should be fine in a few more weeks. The Orioles are going to slow-play him, so the 22-year-old probably won't be ready for the start of Grapefruit League games, but all indications are that he'll be completely fine by the time Opening Day rolls around. Heading into his second MLB season in 2024, Henderson has planted himself inside the top-10 fantasy shortstops after winning the American League Rookie of the Year in 2023. The left-handed hitter batted .255/.325/.489 with an .814 OPS, 28 home runs, 82 RBI, 100 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 560 at-bats, and his average could improve if he shows better plate discipline as he matures.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MASN Sports - Roch Kubatko
Share:
2 weeks agoHouston Astros manager Joe Espada said that right-hander Justin Verlander (shoulder) "walked in today feeling good about how the arm feels" after throwing off a mound on Thursday in spring training. Verlander wasn't going full speed on Thursday, but it's a positive sign regardless as he looks to bounce back after having a setback with his right shoulder this offseason. The 40-year-old is a bit behind the other pitchers and probably isn't going to be ready for the start of Grapefruit League action, but as long as he doesn't have any further setbacks, he could still be ready for Opening Day. The 40-year-old three-time Cy Young winner is an extreme injury risk at this point in his career and is no longer a fantasy ace. He'll even be somewhat risky as a No. 3 starter for fantasy rotations since it would be more of a surprise if he didn't miss time due to injury in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB.com - Brian McTaggart
Share:
2 weeks agoLos Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (elbow) is on the scheduled to face live pitching against left-hander Alex Vesia at spring training on Friday. Manager Dave Roberts said on Thursday that Ohtani would start facing live pitching at camp "soon," and he wasn't lying. It's another encouraging sign that Ohtani will be ready for Opening Day in his first year in LA after undergoing his second Tommy John surgery last year. The Japanese superstar isn't going to pitch for the Dodgers in 2024, but he'll be their full-time DH and is considered a top-15 overall fantasy player by RotoBaller. There's a chance Ohtani might not fully be himself at the plate early on this year, but that really shouldn't influence drafters when deciding whether to add him to your team in the early rounds.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Fabian Ardaya

2 weeks agoWhen asked on Thursday if his current five-year term would be his last, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said, "This is going to be my last term." Manfred's current contract is set to expire in January of 2029. He's in his 10th year as the commissioner in 2024 and has overseen a period of significant change in the game, with the pitch clock perhaps being the biggest of those changes. The move to shorten MLB games has been seen as a resounding success, but Manfred has also had his fair share of missteps, including the lockout, the inconsistent baseballs and the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal. The move to a universal designated hitter has also been among one of the more successful rule changes that has taken place under Manfred's watch.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Boston Globe - Alex Speier

2 weeks agoUpdating a previous report, free-agent veteran third baseman Eduardo Escobar has agreed to an undisclosed deal with the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday night, pending a physical. Escobar will give the Blue Jays even more infield depth at the hot corner for the 2024 season after hitting a combined .226/.269/.344 with six home runs, 31 RBI and 32 runs scored in 99 games with the New York Mets and Los Angeles Angels a year ago. The 35-year-old Venezuelan switch-hitter has 13 years of major-league experience but didn't look like he had much left to offer in 2023. In Toronto, he'll be competing for playing time at third base with Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Cavan Biggio and Santiago Espinal. More often than not, Escobar will most likely come off the bench in his new digs.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: New York Post - Jon Heyman
Share:
2 weeks agoTexas Rangers veteran left-hander Danny Duffy is a bona-fide contender to make the Opening Day roster and is being evaluated for the fifth starting rotation spot in spring training, alongside fellow lefty Cody Bradford and at least six other pitchers. The 35-year-old southpaw has had three straight injury-plagued seasons, including last year with the Rangers on a minor-league deal, but he didn't allow a run in 15 2/3 innings in the Puerto Rican winter league. If he doesn't make the rotation, he'll be happy to work in a multi-inning relief role. Duffy said he hasn't felt as good as he does now since May of 2021, when he had a 2.51 ERA after 13 games before his elbow started barking. He has experience, but if he is pitching in the majors in 2024 for Texas, he'll be a very risky fantasy option in AL-only leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: RangersToday.com - Jeff Wilson

2 weeks agoAtlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker said that he saw right-hander Huascar Ynoa (elbow) throw a bullpen session the other day in camp after coming back from Tommy John surgery at the end of the 2022 season. "He looks great, I know that," Snitker said. The 25-year-old missed the entire 2023 campaign, but he appears to be making good progress and could be ready for the start of the 2024 regular season, barring any setbacks. The Dominican hurler has appeared in 31 games (24 starts) in four major-league seasons with Atlanta, going a combined 4-8 with a 5.22 ERA (4.35 FIP) and 1.32 WHIP with 45 walks and 128 strikeouts in 122 1/3 innings pitched. When healthy, Ynoa has some nice strikeout upside, but he'll surely be on an innings limit in 2024 after missing all of last season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - Justin Toscano
Share:
2 weeks agoBoth Toronto Blue Jays pitchers Mitch White and Bowden Francis are being built up as starters in spring training. Cuban right-hander Yariel Rodriguez is also coming to camp as a starter, but heread more...
Share:
2 weeks agoLos Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington said that right-hander Zach Plesac will open spring training as a candidate for the starting rotation. However, Plesac could still wind up in the bullpen or even in the minors to kick off the 2024 regular season. The top five Angels starters heading into camp are left-handers Patrick Sandoval, Tyler Anderson and Reid Detmers and right-handers Griffin Canning and Chase Silseth. Plesac, 29, is probably going to need an injury to one of the aforementioned starters in order to open the year in the Halos' rotation. After looking decent with the Cleveland Guardians in 2019 and 2020, he has struggled each of the last three years, going a combined 14-19 with a 4.72 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 77 walks and 214 K's in 295 2/3 frames over 55 outings (54 starts).--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Orange County Register - Jeff Fletcher
Share:
2 weeks agoLos Angeles Angels left-handed reliever Drew Pomeranz (elbow), who is in spring training on a minor-league deal, said he's "full-go" in his effort to return to the majors for the first time since 2021. Pomeranz had elbow surgery in August of 2021 and has dealt with several setbacks since. "Pushing from bullpens to game speed is where I had real trouble," Pomeranz said. "I kept getting reinjured and reinjured. It's pretty frustrating trying to figure out what's going on… I feel good right now, probably the same point I would have in any spring training coming in." Anything the Angels manage to get out of the 35-year-old veteran southpaw in 2024 would be gravy. Although he had a 1.75 ERA in 2021 before his injury, Pomeranz shouldn't be drafted in any fantasy leagues this spring.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Orange County Register - Jeff Fletcher
Share:
2 weeks agoLos Angeles Angels left-hander Reid Detmers, who has had a rollercoaster first couple of years in the big leagues, said that he worked to refine his mechanics over the winter and now has a better idea of what he needs to fix when his delivery goes awry. The former first-rounder in 2020, who threw a perfect game in 2022, is aiming for more consistency after going 12-19 with a 4.37 ERA (4.14 FIP) and 1.32 WHIP with 117 walks and 309 strikeouts in 298 1/3 innings over 58 starts in his first three big-league campaigns. Detmers' goal in 2023 was to win 20 games, but he ended up winning just four. With a softer slider now in his arsenal, he was able to finish last year with a 2.41 ERA in his final seven starts, giving hope to fantasy managers that he may actually be able to put it all together in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Orange County Register - Jeff Fletcher
Share:
2 weeks agoArizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said he doesn't expect right-hander Drey Jameson (elbow) to pitch in 2024 after having Tommy John surgery last September. Jameson will spend all year rehabbing with the hopes of being ready to go for the start of the 2025 regular season. The 26-year-old former first-rounder in 2019 out of Ball State made his big-league debut in 2022 and has posted a strong 2.63 ERA (4.17 FIP), a 1.31 WHIP, one save, 25 walks and 61 strikeouts in 65 innings over 19 appearances (seven starts) for the D-backs in the last two years. Jameson lost out on a starting role out of camp last spring but was very effective in a relief role in Arizona's bullpen. The Diamondbacks almost certainly want Jameson to pitch in a starting role in the long-term.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Arizona Sports - Alex Weiner
Share:
2 weeks agoWashington Nationals right-hander Trevor Williams is the only healthy pitcher who has not reported to spring training yet, as he remains home in San Diego waiting for his wife to give birth to the couple's first child. Barring another addition to the roster, Williams is penciled in as the team's No. 5 starter and is expected to arrive at camp within the next few days. Based on what general manager Mike Rizzo said, the 31-year-old shouldn't face any competition for his rotation spot to open the 2024 season. He won't really be of much consideration in mixed fantasy leagues, though, after posting a 5.55 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 144 1/3 innings for the Nationals last season. When former first-rounder Cade Cavalli (elbow) makes his season debut at some point this summer, it could push Williams to a long-relief role.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MASN Sports - Mark Zuckerman
