Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that right-hander Max Scherzer (thumb) threw a 45-pitch bullpen session in Florida on Monday that went well. Scherzer's next step is to face live hitters in Toronto on Thursday or Friday. The 40-year-old future Hall of Famer's bullpen on Monday was his second session in three days, and he's now ready to take the next step as he attempts to return from a nagging right-thumb injury that has limited him to just one start in his first year with the team. If Scherzer can throw a couple successful live batting practice sessions, he should be cleared to embark on a minor-league rehab assignment. He's been on the injured list since March 30 and probably won't be able to return to Toronto's starting rotation for at least another couple of weeks.
