Max Scherzer to Face Live Hitters This Week
Max Scherzer (thumb) threw a 45-pitch bullpen session in Florida on Monday that went well. Scherzer's next step is to face live hitters in Toronto on Thursday or Friday. The 40-year-old future Hall of Famer's bullpen on Monday was his second session in three days, and he's now ready to take the next step as he attempts to return from a nagging right-thumb injury that has limited him to just one start in his first year with the team. If Scherzer can throw a couple successful live batting practice sessions, he should be cleared to embark on a minor-league rehab assignment. He's been on the injured list since March 30 and probably won't be able to return to Toronto's starting rotation for at least another couple of weeks. It's hard for fantasy managers to remain patient with an aging pitcher that has struggled with injuries the last few years.
