Matt Breida 2022 NFL Player Outlook: The Giants Top Backup RB
2 years agoNew York Giants running back Matt Breida is coming off a season with the Buffalo Bills he will want to wipe from his memory. He finished the season with only 26 touches and 125 yards in nine games. Breida was stuck behind Zack Moss and Devin Singletary on the depth chart and mainly used on special teams. This will be his third team in three seasons. The 27-year-old has shown elite speed in the past, reaching speeds up to 22.30 MPH (top 10 all-time). New York signed Breida to backup for Saquon Barkley, who has missed 18 games in the last two seasons. The only other option for New York is Gary Brightwell, who they drafted in 2021 in the sixth round from the University of Arizona. Brightwell saw little to no playing time last year and is coming off a season-ending neck injury. Breida should have no problem locking in the backup running back position. Fantasy managers who draft Barkley should look to add Breida as insurance. The speedster can also see time on New York's special teams, which ranked tenth the previous season. Is Breida worth the late-round pick? Not really, but if Barkley goes down with an injury, he will be on everyone's waiver wire radar.
