Marlins Invite Yonny Chirinos To Spring Training
10 months agoThe Miami Marlins signed free-agent right-hander Yonny Chirinos to a minor-league deal on Tuesday with an invitation to big-league spring training. Chirinos spent 2018-23 with the Tampa Bay Rays, so new general manager Peter Bendix is familiar with Chirinos already. The 30-year-old veteran has appeared in 69 games (38 starts) at the major-league level and has produced a 106 ERA+ and 1.20 WHIP. In 20 appearances (nine starts) for the Rays and Atlanta Braves in 2023, he had an offspeed run value in the 87th percentile, a ground-ball percentage in the 71st percentile and a walk percentage in the 65th percentile while posting a career-worst 5.40 ERA (5.43 FIP) and 1.39 WHIP while walking 27 and striking out 53 in 85 total innings. Chirinos hasn't really been effective since 2019 and will be battling for a roster spot in Miami in 2024.
