Justin Verlander Shut Down With Lat Strain
5 years agoHouston Astros starting pitcher Justin Verlander (lat) has been shut down with a "mild lat strain," according to general manager James Click. Click said they "don't know yet" whether Verlander will be ready for Opening Day, but that would be optimistic to expect that at this point. The good news is it doesn't seem very serious, but lat injuries for pitchers can linger, especially for one that recently turned 37 years old. The veteran right-hander won the American League Cy Young in 2019 and remains one of the best pitchers in baseball, but this injury news just weeks before the regular season will make him a high-risk, high-reward fantasy ace. For what it's worth, Verlander doesn't expect to be ready for Opening Day, and this is an injury that could linger and cause him to miss a month or more.
