Devin Williams 2021 Fantasy Outlook: How Valuable Can A Non-Closer Be?
4 years agoThere were no relief pitchers better than Milwaukee Brewers rookie Devin Williams in 2020. In 27 innings, he gave up just one earned run while striking out 53 batters and walking nine. That was good for a 0.33 ERA, a 0.63 WHIP and a 53% strikeout rate. It is nearly impossible to keep ratios that great for a full season, so regression has to be expected going into his sophomore season. Even if we assume that he will continue to be the best reliever in the game, his fantasy contributions are really limited by the lack of saves. It is not like he has a real chance to earn a closer role, either, unless the Brew Crew trade incumbent closer Josh Hader, who is a top-five reliever in the game. Williams' value depends on your league setup, but in standard leagues without holds, fantasy managers shouldn't overvalue him because of his insane ratios in his rookie campaign.
