David Njoku 2018 Outlook: A Sneaky TE1 Play
6 years agoWhile tight end is generally a position in which it takes longer to make an impact in the NFL, things are looking good for David Njoku to play a major role in his second season. The Browns traded a third-round draft pick to acquire Tyrod Taylor from the Bills to start at quarterback while number one draft Baker Mayfield learns the scheme. Even though Taylor is not flashy, he is a very tight end friendly quarterback as seen by his usage of Charles Clay.
In 2017, a year in which Clay started in 13 games, the tight end had 49 receptions for 558 yards and two touchdowns. As a much better athlete of similar size to Clay, Njoku will easily outpace the numbers he put up in his rookie season in which he had 32 receptions for 387 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games with no consistent quarterback play and sharing time with Seth DeValve. With the weapons surrounding him on the revamped Browns offense and solid numbers from Taylor, Njoku could easily be a TE1 and fight for 75 receptions and six to eight touchdowns.
