Carlos Gomez To Replace Denard Span
7 years agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Carlos Gomez (groin strain) is going to be activated this weekend. The Rays just traded away Span to Seattle and thus have a roster spot opening to go with an opening in the outfield. In the simulated game Friday, Gomez hit two home runs to show he is ready. The remaining question is whether he is activated Saturday or Sunday, with Saturday seeming to make more sense from the outside. Gomez was a superstar back in 2013 and 2014. In those two seasons, he combined for 47 home runs and 74 steals with a .284 average in both seasons. He has since struggled and has not played more than 118 games in any of the past three seasons while playing for three teams. Gomez still has some upside to become relevant, as he was on pace for 20 home runs and 12 steals before the injury, but he needs to raise his .200 batting average. Also, you will need to keep an eye on how he runs when he comes back since steals are part of his appeal.
