C.J. Gardner-Johnson Avoids ACL Tear After Being Carted Off
Houston Texans safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson (knee) suffered a scary right-leg injury during training camp practice on Thursday and needed to be carted off the field. However, after undergoing an MRI exam, sources tell NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that Gardner-Johnson did not tear his ACL. The 27-year-old defensive back will undergo more tests, but initial tests provided good news. A torn ACL would have ended his entire 2025 season before it even began. While Gardner-Johnson avoided an ACL tear, it doesn't mean that he'll be ready to go for the Week 1 regular-season opener in early September in his first year in Houston. Gardner-Johnson was a fourth-round pick in 2019 by the Saints. He spent three years in New Orleans before playing for the Eagles in 2022 and 2024, with a year sandwiched in between with Detroit. The Texans secondary can ill-afford to lose a player of Gardner-Johnson's caliber.
