Bears Defense 2019 Outlook: An Elite Unit Remains Intact
5 years agoThe Chicago Bears defense truly became a force of nature last season. The addition of All-Pro Khalil Mack days before the season began catapulted an up-and-coming unit into one of the NFL's very best. The stats in 2018: nine fumble recoveries (T-14), 19 forced fumbles (T-7th), 27 interceptions (1st) and 50 sacks (T-3rd). They scored four defensive touchdowns and carried the team to victories at times. The unit returns with most of its starting lineup intact, including some intriguing new pieces. Safety Ha-Ha Clinton Dix was signed on a moderate deal to replace Adrian Amos, slot corner Buster Skrine was signed to replace Bryce Callahan and, perhaps most importantly, Chuck Pagano replaces defensive wiz Vic Fangio at coordinator. Pagano has promised in the offseason that he won't change what isn't broken in 2019 but Fangio's in-game play calls were lauded all last season and earned him a heading coaching job in Denver. Nonetheless, the Bears will enter 2019 with a world of potential. Another year of maturation for young stud Roquan Smith, combined with All-Pro's Mack and safety Eddie Jackson manning the field and the unit should once again be ranked among the top-5 throughout the entire league. The Bears defense will be a wise investment for fantasy owners come draft day but patience will be needed to avoid over-drafting. Mack and Co. will once again be elite in 2019 but could take small steps backwards after a dominant season in '18.
