Alex Avila Agrees With Nationals
4 years agoThe Washington Nationals agreed to an undisclosed one-year deal with free-agent catcher Alex Avila on Thursday. The left-handed hitter will serve as the backup in D.C. and pair with veteran Yan Gomes. Avila, who will turn 34 years old on Friday, is entering his 13th big-league season. He hit just .184 in 49 at-bats over 22 games for the Twins in 2020 and has also played for the Tigers, White Sox, Cubs and Diamondbacks. Avila has a career slash line of .235/.348/.394 with a .742 OPS and a 101 OPS+, earning an All-Star selection in 2011. He has played with Nationals starters Max Scherzer, Jon Lester and Patrick Corbin before, so he'll bring some familiarity behind the dish. Avila will mainly bring solid defensive skills to Washington and can be ignored in most fantasy leagues as the backup.
