ANALYSIS: Green Bay Packers rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden entered the regular season trending upward as he was establishing a strong connection with quarterback Jordan Love in training camp and the preseason. In addition, with Jayden Reed (foot) being limited with a Jones fracture, Golden appeared primed to emerge as the team's clear WR1.
However, in the season opener, Reed was able to suit up, and Golden was given a rotation or role. The Texas product caught both of his targets for a mere 16 yards. He saw fewer targets than Reed, Romeo Doubs, and Tucker Kraft.
While Golden could certainly see his role grow in this offense, for now, he projects to be their WR3/WR4.
Even though the game against the Washington Commanders on Thursday evening could be relatively high scoring, fantasy managers should look to keep Golden on their bench. Despite being drafted as a potential weekly flex/WR3, his target share in Week 1 is not overly promising, and he has a very low floor in this contest.
However, if Reed were to suffer a setback or Golden were to overtake Doubs on the depth chart, he would re-enter must-start status. He is best left as a dart throw in DFS competitions.
