ANALYSIS: After letting Rico Dowdle walk in free agency, the Dallas Cowboys opted to fill their running back room with veterans Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders. However, they also added a rookie in the fifth round, Jaydon Blue.
Blue spent his entire college career with Texas. During his first two seasons, he had a limited role but was able to rack up a career-best 730 yards in his final season. Blue also showed promise as receiving back, catching 42 passes in 2024.
Throughout the training camp, Blue was given opportunities to practice alongside the first team, which was a very positive sign. However, in early August, the Texas product suffered an ankle injury. This injury has limited him throughout the month of August. He was able to turn the corner in time to suit up for their preseason finale, but he suffered a setback in that game.
While the team is hopeful their rookie running back can turn the corner and suit up for their Week 1 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles, fantasy managers should take a cautious approach.
Given that Blue will face one of the toughest defensive units in the sport, he is best to fade. In addition, given his lingering injuries, the Cowboys will likely give Williams and Sanders more opportunities in this contest. While Blue is still worth holding in all formats as he could overtake this backfield later in the season, he does not possess much upside outside of deep 14+ team leagues as a low-end RB4.
