AT&T Byron Nelson - PGA DFS Overview

TPC Craig Ranch

7,468 Yards - Par 72 - Greens: Bentgrass - Designer: Tom Weiskopf

After a failed experiment at Texas-based Trinity Forest, the AT&T Byron Nelson will give it a whirl at TPC Craig Ranch this year. As you can tell by the name, the club is part of the TPC Network, which does ensure a certain level of quality and familiarity. This Tom Weiskopf design incorporates the area's natural, rolling hills, as well as Rowlett Creek, into its lengthy 7,400 yards.

Routinely rated as one of the toughest courses in Texas, this will mark the first PGA Tour event at TPC Craig Ranch, though the course did host the Korn Ferry Tour Championship in both 2008 and 2012, with winning scores of -17 and -16 in those events. With four gettable Par-5s, we can expect this stout field of PGA Tour pros to light this course up and I wouldn't be surprised to see the winning score at 20-under par or better.

We have no course history or true reference points for research this week, so I'll lean on my trusty standby, SG: Approach. I'll also heavily weigh Par-5 Scoring, Birdies or Better Gained, and Proximity from 200+ yards.

For an in-depth breakdown of this week's course, check out RotoBaller's PGA Premium Course Breakdown by Josh Bennett!

High-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Bryson DeChambeau ($12,300)

It was a weird week for Bryson DeChambeau at the Wells Fargo, as he flew home to Dallas Friday thinking he missed the cut, only to turn around and fly right back after making the weekend. DeChambeau overcame all the nuttiness to  play the final 36 holes in six-under par and log an impressive-considering-the-circumstances T9.

This week Bryson is back home in Dallas and set to play the AT&T Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch. As a Dallas resident, we have to imagine that he's extremely familiar with this layout and it appears to be a great fit on paper. DeChambeau should be able to take advantage of the property's four Par-5s (10th SG: Par-5s) and utilize his underrated long-iron play (sixth in Proximity 175-200 & first 200+ yards).

Jon Rahm ($12,200)

I was a little surprised to see Jon Rahm teeing it up this week, as he has no history in the AT&T Byron Nelson and no ties to Dallas. I suppose the Spaniard is trying to sharpen his game in advance of next week's PGA Championship at Kiawah Island. Rahm didn't look especially great en route to a missed cut last at Quail Hollow, though I expect a better performance this week at TPC Craig Ranch. He checks all the boxes that we suspect will lead to success on this layout, as he routinely destroys Par-5s (11th SG: Par-5) and can rack up birdies in bunches (12th Birdies or Better Gained).

Jordan Spieth ($11,800)

Our king is back! Jordan Spieth is set to make his first start since an impressive T3 at the Masters last month. The lengthy layoff is a slight concern, but there are lots of strong narratives surrounding Spieth this week...he made his first-ever PGA Tour start in this event and it's close to his heart. He's a Dallas resident and has always performed well in his home state of Texas with a victory at the Valero being the most recent example. Spieth has also played extremely well throughout his career in the week before a major championship, logging four career wins in that situation (see also: Valero). Let's also not forget that he's simply playing tremendous golf...he ranks first in this field in SG: T2G & Approach, while also topping the list in Birdies or Better Gained.

Scottie Scheffler ($11,200)

Yet another Dallas native, Scottie Scheffler is a player that we feel is going to grab a win on the PGA Tour very soon. Scheffler came close in his home state earlier this year, losing in the finals of the WGC-Match Play at Austin Country Club. He'll get another chance at a Lonestar title this week at TPC Craig Ranch, a layout that he's familiar with as a Dallas resident. Scheffler is a prolific scorer that currently ranks seventh in the AT&T field in Birdies or Better Gained.

Will Zalatoris ($11,000)

Maybe we should have labeled this week's "High Priced Plays" the "Dallas Resident Plays", as we round out the section with Will Zalatoris, a - you guessed it - Dallas resident. Willie Z looked a little human last week at Quail Hollow, missing his first cut of 2021 after going four-over par through two rounds at the Wells Fargo. I expect a nice rebound this week on a TPC Craig Ranch layout that he's both familiar with and a great fit for. Zalatoris grades out eighth in the Nelson field in Par-5 scoring while ranking eighth in SG: Approach.

Mid-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Marc Leishman ($10,900)

The Big Aussie heads to the Byron Nelson with loads of positive momentum on the heels of a T5 at the Masters and a victory with Cameron Smith in the Zurich Classic team event. This will be Leishman's first start since the win in New Orleans and he also has something that very few golfers in this week's field have...a documented history at TPC Craig Ranch. Leish finished seventh in the 2008 Korn Ferry Tour Championship on the Dallas layout. In addition to that bit of course experience, he comes to town ranked seventh in Birdies or Better Gained and 11th in SG: Approach.

Sergio Garcia ($10,600)

Sergio's 2016 Byron Nelson win didn't come on this week's TPC Craig Ranch layout, but we shouldn't underestimate what a great projected fit the Spaniard is for this golf course. Garcia is a legendary ball striker that's a master with long irons. He ranks sixth in this field in Proximity from 200+ yards. Despite being 41-years-old, Garcia still has plenty of length...he ranks 16th in the field in Driving Distance, which has helped him to score on Par-5s at a clip that grades out second in this week's field.

Luke List ($10,200)

After we get outside of the "elite" players in the field, pricing gets gross in a hurry this week. So while Luke List at $10.2k is enough to make me break out in a cold sweat, we almost have to consider the strong ball-striker that's a great statistical fit for TPC Craig Ranch, logged a T13 in the 2012 KFT Championship on this layout, and is coming off a terrific T6 performance at Wells Fargo last week. List has now gained strokes T2G in five consecutive starts and ranks fourth in this field in SG: Par-5s.

Low-Priced FanDuel DFS Players

Thomas Pieters ($9,500)

Perhaps best known for his volatility and explosive temper, Thomas Pieters has been uncharacteristically consistent in 2021. He's logged top-15 results in both of his PGA Tour starts this year and has also managed top-15 finishes in his last two Euro Tour appearances. He won't pop in many stat models because he still primarily plays on the Euro Tour, but Pieters is an elite ball-striker that is also very capable of handling any Texas winds that might pop up this week.

Brandt Snedeker ($9,200)

Catching Brandt Snedeker on the right week has been tricky business over the last few years, but I'm willing to give Sneds a look in this spot. His form has been trending in the right direction as of late, as he's went T6-T42-T11 over his last three starts and also posted a T4 at the Zurich with partner Keith Mitchell. The Vandy product might not seem like a great fit at TPC Craig Ranch, but he surprisingly ranks fourth in SG: Par-5s over his last 24 rounds and stands 13th in Birdies or Better Gained in the same timespan. We know Sneds can get white-hot with the putter and I like the upside we're grabbing here at $9.2k.

Tom Hoge ($8,800)

This slate is shaping up as an "embrace the volatility" spot for me and perhaps no player better embodies that mantra than Tom Hoge, a golfer that has the ability to both miss cuts in spectacular fashion or post seemingly-random top-five finishes. He checks several of the boxes we're looking for at TPC Craig Ranch...grading out ninth in the field in Proximity from 200+ yards and third in Overall Proximity. Hoge also ranks FIRST in this field in Birdie Opportunities Gained, while coming in 25th in converted Birdies or Better Gained.

Vincent Whaley ($8,500)

The search for upside continues as we work our way down the salary scale. Vincent Whaley isn't a household name, but he's a player that's been sneaky-good as of late. Whaley has managed to run off seven-straight made cuts with hardly anyone noticing. He grades out 16th in this Nelson field in SG: Par-5 and 17th in Birdies or Better Gained over the last 24 rounds. I like the 26-year-old's aggressiveness and he ranks 37th on the PGA Tour in "Going For The Green", attempting to reach Par-5s in two at a nearly 67% clip.
