2026 Fantasy Football Running Back Outlooks

Alvin Kamara, New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara surprised everyone by showing up to OTAs on Wednesday since he has a history of skipping voluntary workouts in the offseason. Even head coach Kellen Moore was caught off guard. "Obviously a little bit unexpected," Moore said. New Orleans added RB Travis Etienne Jr. in free agency, leading to offseason speculation that Kamara could hang up his cleats or be traded.

His status for the 2026 season is far from settled. The Saints have indicated they would like to address Kamara's contract, but the team's all-time leading rusher said he hasn't talked with general manager Mickey Loomis about taking a pay cut. The 30-year-old five-time Pro Bowler is entering the final year of his contract and holds a salary cap hit of around $10.5 million, which was already reduced earlier this offseason.

Kamara said he has no beef with the Saints after they added Etienne, and is "going to be ready" to play in the Big Easy for a 10th season. If Kamara stays with the Saints this year, he's going to be the clear No. 2 behind Etienne, which will cause a drastic drop in his fantasy value after being the Saints' lead back for the last nine years.

Jahmyr Gibbs, Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell said that the expectation is that running back Jahmyr Gibbs will be the team's "bellcow" in 2026, according to Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News. "We're gonna hang our hat on him," Campbell said. It's not unexpected, especially after the team traded David Montgomery to the Houston Texans early in the offseason.

The 24-year-old Gibbs, who was the 12th overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft out of the University of Alabama, has been one of the best all-around RBs since he set foot in the NFL, being named a Pro Bowler in each of his first three seasons. The Georgia native has a whopping 3,580 rushing yards and 39 rushing touchdowns, to go along with 181 catches (228 targets) for 1,449 receiving yards and 10 receiving TDs in 49 regular-season games for Detroit.

Gibbs hasn't dipped under 5.0 yards per carry in any of his three seasons, and is an elite three-down fantasy RB. With even more usage coming in 2026, fantasy managers sitting in the No. 2 draft spot this year will be ecstatic if he doesn't come off the board at No. 1 overall.

De'Von Achane, Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley said that running back De'Von Achane (shoulder) has been limited to individual drills during mandatory minicamp this week, according to Chris Perkins of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Achane is being eased back into offseason workouts after he had a clean-up procedure on a shoulder injury that caused him to miss the regular-season finale last year. All signs point to the star RB being fully ready for training camp and the start of the 2026 regular season, though, so fantasy managers should have nothing to worry about.

The Dolphins put their money where their mouth is this offseason, signing the 24-year-old former third-rounder to a four-year, $68 million extension last month. Achane had his first 1,000-yard rushing season with eight rushing touchdowns in 16 starts in 2025 in his third year in the NFL despite the Dolphins' offense struggling all year. More offensive struggles could be coming as Miami rebuilds, but Achane should have a high floor thanks to heavy volume in the Dolphins' backfield in 2026. Ashton Jeanty, Las Vegas Raiders

Levi Edwards of the Las Vegas Raiders' official site writes that the Raiders have put an emphasis during offseason workouts to make sure running back Ashton Jeanty "thrives and continues to grow in his role as the lead back." The Raiders selected Jeanty with the sixth overall pick last year out of Boise State, and the 22-year-old impressed in his first year in the NFL, leading all rookie RBs in rushing yards (975). Nearly 60% of his yardage came after contact, though. "If I don't have to, I don't want to come off the field," Jeanty said.

The second-year back is "doing all the right things" to ensure that he's a three-down workhorse in 2026, according to RBs coach Omar Young. New head coach Klint Kubiak has never had a true workhorse back leading his offenses, but that could change now that he has Jeanty at his disposal. With a new coaching staff in town and quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Fernando Mendoza under center, Jeanty's fantasy stock is on the rise heading into his second NFL campaign. Nicholas Singleton, Tennessee Titans

After a disappointing senior season at Penn State in 2025, running back Nicholas Singleton fell all the way to the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft before being selected by the Tennessee Titans. Across 12 games with the Nittany Lions last year, Singleton recorded just 768 scrimmage yards on 147 touches. Still, the 22-year-old scored 14 touchdowns, and he finished his collegiate career with an impressive 54 scores across 53 games. Singleton may struggle to see playing time in Tennessee as a rookie with veteran backs Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears both ahead of him on the depth chart.

However, both Pollard and Spears are entering the final years of their current contracts in 2026. If Singleton impresses his coaches this season, he could finish the year as the clear running back of the future for the Titans. Dynasty managers should temper their short-term expectations, but Singleton is still worth taking a shot on for his long-term upside in Tennessee.
