Fantasy Football Tight End Player Outlooks

George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers playmaker George Kittle has been one of the most reliable fantasy tight ends over the last few years. He has finished top-5 at the position in six of the past seven seasons and is coming off one of his better fantasy campaigns in 2024. Kittle finished as the TE3 in PPR formats and averaged 15.8 PPR fantasy points per game. That 15.8 average ranked first among all tight ends last year. The 31-year-old caught 78 passes for 1,106 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games for the 49ers.

As we head into the 2025-2026 season, Kittle should remain a strong TE1 option for managers. He scored at least 14 PPR fantasy points in 11 of 15 contests last year, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him repeat those fantasy numbers this season. Deebo Samuel Sr. was traded this offseason, and Brandon Aiyuk (knee) is coming off a season-ending ACL injury. Therefore, we could see the veteran up his 22% target share from last year. That all makes him a perfect target early in 2025 fantasy football drafts.

Sam LaPorta, Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta had an explosive inaugural year, catching 86 of his 120 targets for 889 yards. He also had 10 touchdowns, the most in the National Football League at the position. As a result, LaPorta was one of the first tight ends selected in most fantasy leagues entering the 2024-25 season. Unfortunately, the 2023 No. 34 overall pick wasn't as potent in his sophomore campaign. LaPorta amassed 60 receptions (83 targets) for 726 yards while finding the end zone seven times. Granted, things could have been much worse.

Still, LaPorta wasn't nearly as consistent from a production standpoint. He had at least five catches in 10 games in his first season. Yet, LaPorta had five grabs or more in only five contests last season. With that in mind, fantasy managers wonder if the 24-year-old can turn things around. There's certainly reason to believe he can. However, the Lions' offense is loaded, with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs always in the Pro Bowl conversation, meaning they will continue to command attention.

In addition, Jameson Williams is coming off his first 1,000-yard receiving season, and David Montgomery should also get his touches, especially inside the 20-yard line. With all things considered, including Detroit having one of the toughest schedules this season, LaPorta may have a tough time getting back to where he was as a rookie. However, the former Iowa Hawkeye remains one of the best options at the tight end spot, regardless of format, and he has the potential to be more productive than Brock Bowers, Trey McBride, and George Kittle, to name a few. LaPorta comes in as RotoBaller's TE4 heading into the upcoming fantasy football drafts.

Evan Engram, Denver Broncos

Tight end Evan Engram, who was the 23rd overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft by the New York Giants out of Mississippi, had pretty much always teased high-end fantasy potential in his five years in the Big Apple. He had 722 receiving yards and a career-high six touchdowns in his rookie year, but never again came close to matching or exceeding those marks with the G-Men. Engram put it all together in 2023 in his second year with the Jacksonville Jaguars, setting career-highs in receptions (114), targets (143,) and receiving yards (963).

It came crashing down in 2024, though, as he played in only nine games due to hamstring and shoulder injuries and had a career-low 7.8 yards per catch before being shut down for the year. Although he's at the dreaded age of 30 in the NFL, Engram is healthy now, and with a Denver Broncos team desperately searching for more production from the tight end position.

While nobody should be expecting Engram to see the kind of volume he had in 2023, he should be a reliable target for second-year QB Bo Nix in the intermediate area of the field and in the red zone. He could be Nix's No. 2 target behind Courtland Sutton, although he's probably going to need to find paydirt more often to be a legitimate TE1 in fantasy in 2025. RotoBaller has him ranked 10th at the position in his new digs.

Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs

The days of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce being a safe, first or second-round selection in fantasy football drafts are over. The 35-year-old is still churning out 90-reception seasons, but the yardage and touchdown totals have plummeted. Kelce's 823 yards last season were the lowest since his rookie season (when he played one game). It was the same story for his three touchdowns. His yards per target dropped by nearly two yards. While age may be partially to blame, Patrick Mahomes has spread the football to a crowded roster of pass catchers.

In the three games Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy shared the field, Kelce saw four, three, and five targets; three of his five lowest marks for the season. He and Rice operate best in the middle of the field on short-area throws. Marquise Brown wasn't active in that timeframe either. The muddied pecking order has dropped Kelce into the middle of the TE1 rankings, a far fall from a fantasy superstar of past seasons.
