Anthony Volpe Leaves Early Friday With Elbow Contusion
Anthony Volpe (elbow) left Friday's 9-6 win over the division-rival Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium early due to a left-elbow contusion, according to the team, and he's currently undergoing X-rays and a CT scan. Volpe was hit by a pitch on his left elbow in the second inning and departed the contest, but not before hitting a three-run shot, his eighth of the season. Oswald Peraza replaced him in the fourth inning. We'll know soon whether the 24-year-old's injury is more of the day-to-day variety or something more serious, but the fact he tried to stay in the game makes us optimistic he avoided a long-term injury. If Volpe needs an injured-list stint, Peraza would likely become the team's starting shortstop. Volpe entered Friday's game hitting .237 (52-for-219) with seven home runs, 34 RBI and seven runs scored in 60 games played. UPDATE: Manager Aaron Boone said Volpe's X-rays and CT scan came back clean.
