NASCAR Xfinity Series: DraftKings DFS Lineup Picks for Portland Pacific Automation 147 (6/3/23)

The NASCAR Xfinity Series heads to Portland on a short week, as last Saturday's race at Charlotte didn't end until Monday night because of weather. This is also a standalone race for the series, so no Cup Series or Truck Series drivers are in the field.

Last year, A.J. Allmendinger won this race, while Myatt Snider was second. Ty Gibbs led 42 laps and finished seventh. Allmendinger and Gibbs aren't in this field as both are running Cup full-time, while Snider is making just his second start of the season on Saturday.

Austin Hill

Starting 8th - $9,900

Among the Xfinity Series regulars, Hill has to be considered one of the biggest favorites today. One reason is that he finished third here last year despite this 21 car not having the same speed its had this season, where Hill's already one three times.

As for DFS purposes, Hill's eighth-place starting spot offers a little room for some place differential points, which is always good. And we know RCR has speed this weekend, because teammate Sheldon Creed is on the pole. Hill should be in contention by the end of Saturday's race.

Sam Mayer

Starting 36th - $9,000

Mayer isn't the best road course driver in the world, but any time a JR Motorsports car is starting this far back on the grid, you've got to have some exposure for place differential purposes.

In his first visit to Portland, Mayer showed speed in qualifying, as he started the race fourth, but he was an early crash victim, knocked out on lap 12 and relegated to a 38th-place finish.

That's a concern again today just because this track was really, really messy last year, but Mayer's still worth a shot. He has six top 10s in 10 road course starts with an average finish of 16.5.

Brandon Jones

Starting 37th - $8,600

Like Mayer, Jones didn't get to turn a qualifying lap and starts from the rear in a JR Motorsports car. And like Mayer, he isn't someone with a stellar record at road courses. He was a solid 11th here last year in a Joe Gibbs car, but he has top 10 finishes in just 10 of his 32 road course starts in the Xfinity Series, with an average finish of 15.3.

Still, Jones ran solidly at COTA, the other road course this season, as he started 26th and finished 11th, and the place differential upside makes him hard to resist. A lineup with both Jones and Mayer could deliver you a DFS win on Saturday if things break correctly.

Kaz Grala

Starting 18th - $8,800

Grala hasn't been nearly as strong as I expected him to be in his first full-time Xfinity season, as he sits 18th in points with two top 10s through 12 races. Three DNFs drag down his average finish to 19.6.

But Grala is known for being good on road courses, with an average finish of 15.8 in 11 road course starts in the Xfinity Series. That's his best average finish at any track type. He didn't run Portland last year, so we don't have that to judge him on, but I do think this is one of Grala's best shots at a strong run all season.

Myatt Snider

Starting 9th - $8,100

This is Snider's second start of the season for Joe Gibbs Racing, as he ran Daytona in this 19 car as well, finishing fifth. But Daytona's a hard place to really judge anything off of, since there's so much uncertainty there.

I'm more interested in judging Snider off his run at Portland last season, when he started 25th and finished second. He led 19 laps in the race, second-most of anyone in the race behind Ty Gibbs.

Overall, Snider's road course performances have been a mixed bag. He has just five top 10s in 16 road course starts, with an average finish of 18.4. But he hasn't always been in the best equipment. For example, he ran one of his three Indy road course starts for a top team, and he finished seventh in that race.

Stefan Parsons

Starting 38th - $5,600

Honestly, I don't love the mid-range on DraftKings today. Parker Retzlaff, Dylan Lupton, and Ryan Sieg were considerations, but I'd preferably have wanted either to start five or so spots below where they qualified. Same for Alex Labbe and Anthony Alfredo. Parker Chase starting 32nd was an option, but I ultimately decided to just focus a lot on that $8,000 and above range, and then fill the last spot with a punt play.

I'm taking Stefan Parsons in that role. Sure, the SS-Greenlight cars haven't had a lot of speed this year, but for this role, I'm mostly just hoping for someone who keeps the car clean through the potential chaos. Last year, only 26 of the 38 drivers finished the race, and every DNF was crash related. Parsons was in the 45 for Alpha Prime in that race and kept things clean, finishing 24th. And that's pretty much what we're hoping for with this spot.
