Martin Truex Jr. does not qualify well at COTA. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver started 17th last year and 25th this year. He was 1.815 seconds off the qualifying time of William Byron on Saturday. Even his practice times were a hair better. There were some top-ten intervals mixed in. Last year, Truex Jr. wound up moving ten spots higher by the end of the race.
