Atlanta Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier has been a hot name on the waiver wire since Cordarrelle Patterson (knee) was placed on injured reserve, but his up-and-down fantasy production has fantasy gamers wondering whether he's worth picking up.

The 22-year-old rookie from BYU was a fifth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft after rushing for 1601 yards and 23 touchdowns in his senior season. Allgeier, who moved from linebacker after his sophomore year, is now the lead back for the Falcons for the time being.

Is he worth picking up even with Cordarrelle Patterson set to return as soon as Week 9?

How Did Tyler Allgeier Play in Week 8?

In a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Allgeier rushed 16 times for 50 yards and his first career NFL touchdown. His 3.1 yards-per-carry left a lot to be desired, but he rushed 10 more times than Caleb Huntley as the clear lead dog in the Falcons' backfield.

He was a fine RB2 or flex play thanks to finding pay dirt, so he's still on the fantasy radar.

Should I Pick Up Tyler Allgeier in Fantasy Football?

In ultra-shallow leagues, Allgeier is probably not worth picking up thanks to his lack of pass-catching upside and the return of Patterson coming soon. It's worth noting Damien Williams (ribs), who was supposed to be a key member of the offense before his Week 1 injury, could be coming back soon too.

However, in deeper leagues, he's worth rostering and is startable thanks to his workload. It's unclear when exactly Patterson will come back, but Allgeier could be used as the secondary option in the running game. The running back position is thin thanks to injuries and bye weeks, so it's acceptable to embrace the uncertainty and stash Allgeier as at least a handcuff running back with immediate value.

If he proves to not have value when the banged-up Falcons running backs return to the lineup, he's easily droppable. That said, don't use a top waiver claim or a bunch of your free agent acquisition budget (FAAB) for him, but add him to your lineup if he falls in your lap.
