When is Zebby Matthews getting called up? Will Matthews get promoted in May 2025? Read about this top fantasy baseball prospect outlook heading into Week 7.
Starting pitcher Zebby Matthews has thrown the ball well in the minors since being drafted in the eighth round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins. The right-hander has a career 3.03 ERA and 270 strikeouts across 49 games (44 starts) between Rookie ball, Single-A, High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A.
Although Matthews struggled a bit in his first stint in the majors last year, he has put up dominant numbers at Triple-A St. Paul this season. The 24-year-old has allowed two runs or fewer in all seven of his starts in 2025.
So, when are the Twins going to call up Matthews? Can we expect him to make his season debut sometime in May? Let's dive in and find out.
Zebby Matthews Prospect Update for Fantasy Baseball
Given the way Matthews has pitched at Triple-A this season, it was only a matter of time until the Twins called him up. The right-hander currently owns a 1.93 ERA and 38 strikeouts in seven starts in 2025. In his last outing on May 10, he didn't allow an earned run across five 1/3 innings pitched against Triple-A Buffalo.
With the Twins optioning Simeon Woods Richardson on Thursday following another rough outing, it appears that Matthews will replace him in the rotation. Bobby Nightengale of The Minnesota Star Tribune reported that the team will call up the right-hander to start Sunday's game against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
Simeon Woods Richardson struggled with walks over his last three starts and the Twins wanted an extra reliever after everyone pitched in Wednesday’s doubleheader, prompting his demotion.

It'll definitely be interesting to see how Matthews looks this time around in the majors. He had a 6.69 ERA across nine starts with the Twins last season, and opposing hitters had an expected .278 batting average against him in those outings.
Zebby Matthews Outlook for Fantasy Baseball
It certainly sounds like Matthews will make his season debut on Sunday. As a result, he should be added in most 12-team leagues before then. He will be a great streaming option for this weekend and has the potential to shove against a Brewers offense that ranks middle of the pack in both runs per game (4.39) and hits per game (7.70).
After that outing, fantasy managers can then determine if he is worth holding onto or dropping to waivers. Nevertheless, Matthews could turn out to be a solid pitching option moving forward. He has added velocity to his four-seam fastball, and his slider is a fantastic secondary pitch.
Zebby Matthews appears to be getting recalled for Sunday.

With a solid 28.1% strikeout rate across his seven starts at Triple-A this season, he's worth an add. He should slot in as Minnesota's No. 5 starter for the foreseeable future.
