NHL DFS Analysis and Picks for 1/10/23

The year 2023 has started off with less than desirable outcomes and at times, games can be much harder to predict than normal. Tonight we pump it up with a 10-game slate and two teams playing on a back-to-back, Buffalo and Seattle. The currently live top-3 highest implied team totals are: Tampa Bay with 4.2, Pittsburgh with 3.8 and San Jose with 3.6 goals. I will do my best in guiding you through this ten-game slate on DraftKings and FanDuel starting at 7:00 p.m. EST.

Vegas Odds for the Day

Goalies

Connor Hellebuyck- DK $7.9K || FD $8.9K

Opponent - Detroit Red Wings

We have a real head-scratcher here with Hellebuyck’s salary. Somehow he is not one of the top salaried netminders on the slate, despite having a very good matchup. The Jets are fully healthy for just the second time this season after a long recovery for winger Nikolaj Ehlers – see below – and Hellebuyck is also on a 4-game win streak, conceding 7 goals in that span while posting above a 0.900 Save Percentage in each game. The Red Wings are on the opposite side of the spectrum and they may find themselves going through another slump with 4 goals in their last 3 games. It is expected that Hellebuyck should see a fair share of ownership on the slate, being a top value play at the goalie position.

Others To Consider (Cash/GPP): Vasilevskiy (DK $8.5K || FD $8.4K), Sorokin (DK $7.6K || FD $8.1K)

Centers

Pierre-Luc Dubois-DK $6K || FD $8.4K

Opponent - Detroit Red Wings

All I can say is take advantage while you can. Give it time and Dubois’s salary will be much higher now that he has a fully functioning line. In the first two games since winger Nikolaj Ehler’s return, Dubois has 2 goals, 4 assists, 9 shots and 3 blocked shots. Ehlers has had an instant impact on Dubois’s success, pushing the center to produce more than what he already was producing. Furthermore, Dubois is currently on a 6-game point streak, where he has amassed 4 goals, 6 assists, 18 shots and 5 blocked shots. Detroit statistically is playing much better than what the score sheets say, putting a bulk of the blame on their netminders. However, if Dubois and company can score early, it will turn into a goal fest.

Tomas Hertl- DK $5.9K || FD $7.2K

Opponent - Arizona Coyotes

There are not many outstanding plays at center tonight, but Hertl just fits the bill and he has a manageable salary, garnering a bit of ownership. The center over his last five games has 2 goals, 3 assists, 11 shots and 6 blocked shots. His production has cooled off, however, one must account that he was playing with lesser-skilled teammates for a few games during that stretch. Arizona is currently on a 5-game losing streak where they have been outscored 22 to 9. This is another team that is faltering due to poor goaltending. Arizona has improved drastically as they were on a 3-game win streak prior to this lull in form, however, they are still conceding 26.78 Shots Against Per 60 – bottom 10 of the league –. Hertl should get every opportunity to reach value tonight.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP): Stamkos (DK $7.5K || FD $8.8K), Malkin (DK $6.1K || FD $6.8K)

Wings

Kevin Labanc- DK $3.4K || FD $5.4K

Opponent - Arizona Coyotes

Similar to Hertl, Labanc is in a great position to have a big night tonight. The winger has moved between the top two lines of San Jose a lot as of late, however, he seems to be finally sticking with Hertl once more. In Labanc’s last five games, he has 1 goal, 3 assists and 10 shots. A few of those matches were with center Logan Couture, who he has found very little success with. Now that Labanc is with Hertl again, he could become one of the top value plays on the slate in a prime matchup.

Nikolaj Ehlers- DK $6.8K || FD $8.4K

Opponent - Detroit Red Wings

Now that he has been mentioned multiple times, we will finally focus on Ehlers who has turned heads in his return. The winger in two games since his recovery, has 1 goal, 2 assists and 4 shots. The shot volume is not there, however, it will come as he continues to get his skates ‘wet’ again. The overall production though is a very big positive, especially for Winnipeg who has needed consistency and scoring from more than 3 players. Detroit’s poor goaltending has been mentioned above and Ehlers will have plenty of chances to start a point streak tonight.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP): Pacioretty (DK $6.5K || FD $8.5K), Zucker (DK $4.3K || FD $6K)

Defense

Ty Smith- DK $2.9K || FD $3.5K

Opponent - Vancouver Canucks

Smith is looking more and more confident out on the ice now given the big role with the Penguins. The defenseman also has scored 6 or more fantasy points in 3 of his 4 games since being called up. Tonight he will get a solid matchup with Vancouver coming to town who are the tenth-worst team in Scoring Chances Against Per 60 – 29.83 – and the fourth-worst in Goals Against Per 60 – 3.37 –, all in the last 10 games. Smith somehow saw a salary reduction since his last game, providing us further salary relief tonight. This is a ‘no-brainer’ play.

Matt Benning- DK $3.3K || FD $3.9K

Opponent - Arizona Coyotes

Benning has gone unnoticed by most prior to tonight, however, after this slate it will be hard to get him at low ownership again. The defenseman has been one of the best value plays consistently on every slate he has played so far this season. Whether he is producing on the score sheet or racking up peripherals, it never ends for Benning. Tonight will be a solid matchup up for him to produce on both ends of the ice. The Coyotes are playing better offensively, in turn providing blocked shot opportunities for Benning, and they also continue to let in too many goals, providing several chances to land on the score sheet. Keep in mind that Benning is currently on a 4-game point streak in over his last five games, he has 4 assists, 3 shots and 8 blocked shots.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP): Sergachev (DK $6.4K || FD $7K), Morrissey (DK $6K || FD $7.4K)
