Should I drop Chris Godwin for fantasy football Week 8? Is Chris Godwin a safe player to cut? Read the fantasy football waivers outlook.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin (fibula) has played in just two games this season and has failed to score double-digit PPR fantasy points in either.
While he was on an absolute tear in 2024 before he suffered a season-ending injury, he has failed to make an impact this season and has missed over three times the number of games he's played.
Does that mean it's time to cut bait and let Godwin go for another player, or should you hang on to him for Week 8 and beyond? Let's dive in.

Should I Drop Chris Godwin in Fantasy Football?
Godwin is still struggling with injuries. The dislocated ankle he had in 2024 only kept him out until Week 4 of this year, but he's now unlikely to even play in Week 8 -- instead, it's looking like he'll be held out through the team's Week 9 bye in an effort to get him healthier.
But it's probably still worth it to hang on to him in your IR spot, because now the Buccaneers WR1, Mike Evans (clavicle, concussion), is likely to miss most if not all of the rest of the regular season. Evans broke his collarbone in Week 7.
Bowles says Chris Godwin and Bucky Irving are "getting better" but didn't know whether either are in play to return to practice this week with a short week before Saints and a bye after that.

Because Tampa Bay played on Monday, they had a "short week" before their upcoming game on Sunday. Godwin seems likely to return in Week 10, then, but it's not known how close he'll be to 100 percent. Still, it's probably not a great idea to drop him.
With Evans out for an extended stretch, Godwin and rookie Emeka Egbuka will likely be the team's top target-earners in the interim.
Who Should I Pick Up for Fantasy Football?
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Darnell Mooney seems primed for a huge week. He'll be playing against the Miami Dolphins at home. The Dolphins have one of the NFL's worst defenses, and Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. has played far better at home than on the road.
2025 Michael Penix Jr. at home:
67/100, 287 pass YPG, 8.6 yards per attempt, 103.0 passer rating, 4 TD, 1 INT
Away:
52/95, 182.7 pass YPG (36% decline), 5.8 YPA (33% decline), 66.5 Passer Rating, 1 TD, 2 INT
Maybe start Kirk Cousins on the road

Mooney is the Falcons' second-best receiver, but he's produced nearly as much as their WR1, Drake London, in games both have started and finished together without injury. Another WR you could snag from the same division is Tez Johnson -- he'll also be set to benefit from Evans' injury with more receiving work.

Johnson is a player I highlighted quite a bit before the 2025 season, and who I loved a lot as a dynasty pick. But his ascension to fantasy relevancy seems to be happening even sooner than I expected, and he's an excellent waiver add for Week 8.
You could also take a shot on New England Patriots WR Kayshon Boutte. The problem with him is that he's pretty inconsistent. But he's played well against Cover 3 defensive shells, and tends to have good games when he faces those defenses.

The Tennessee Titans, whom he faced in Week 7, ran a lot of those shells. One of the best ways to predict how a WR will do against certain teams is to look at how they typically do when facing similar defensive looks, though it's hard to get access to that data without paying a subscription fee to some data charting service.
Houston Texans rookie WR Jaylin Noel is another first-year player I really liked in the pre-draft process. He had a season-high 77 receiving yards on four catches on Monday. He could be a decent spot start in Week 8 if Texans WR1 Nico Collins (concussion) doesn't play.
