13 hours agoThe Tampa Bay Rays agreed to a three-year, $40 million deal with free-agent right-hander Zach Eflin on Thursday. Eflin became a free agent this winter when he declined a $15 million mutual option to remain with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2023. Although he served as a bullpen piece for the Phillies in the postseason, Eflin projects to be a significant piece of Tampa's starting rotation next year. The 28-year-old made only 20 appearances (13 starts) for Philly this year due to injuries, and he posted a 4.04 ERA (3.56 FIP), a 1.12 WHIP, his first career save, 65 strikeouts and only 15 walks in 75 2/3 innings pitched. Eflin was much more effective as a reliever in 2022 (1.17 ERA, 0.522 WHIP) in 7 2/3 regular season innings.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: New York Post - Joel Sherman
15 hours agoThe Milwaukee Brewers and infielder Mike Brosseau avoided salary arbitration on Thursday by agreeing to an undisclosed one-year deal. In his first year with Milwaukee in 2022, Brosseau hit .255/.344/.418 with a career-high-tying six home runs, 23 RBI, 15 runs scored and two stolen bases in 160 plate appearances over 69 games. The 28-year-old can play second, third and first base as a utility infielder for Milwaukee. He's likely to see most of his playing time once again in 2023 as a right-handed utility bat against left-handed pitching. In his four years in the big leagues, he has a slash line of .248/.320/.432 with 22 homers, 69 RBI, 65 runs scored and seven steals in 212 games. His first three years were all with the Tampa Bay Rays.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Brewers Twitter
15 hours agoThe Colorado Rockies are optimistic that third baseman/outfielder Kris Bryant (foot) will arrive at spring training next year healthy after he was limited to 42 games in 2022 due to injuries. "Our trainers and strength guys have checked in with him and from everything I'm being told he looks good. We are optimistic about him showing up (healthy) at spring training," general manager Bill Schmidt said. Bryant dealt with plantar fasciitis for much of the year after inking a seven-year, $182 million deal with the organization last March. But when he was on the field, he hit a strong .306/.376/.475 with five home runs in 181 plate appearances, giving the Rockies and fantasy managers hope that there's still plenty of juice left. Time will tell if he can stay healthy in 2023, but if he can, he could be a bargain in fantasy drafts.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Denver Post - Patrick Saunders
15 hours agoThe Hanshin Tigers of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball officially posted right-hander Shintaro Fujinami on Thursday. Shintaro will have 30 days to negotiate a deal with a major-league club in the United States. The hard-throwing 28-year-old is best known for a nasty split-fingered fastball, but he'll need to exhibit better control in the States if he wants to find prolonged success. Fujinami has a career 3.41 ERA in Japan, and he posted a 3.38 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 65 strikeouts and 21 walks in 66 2/3 innings in 2022 for the Tigers. He was initially compared to two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani when he was younger, but control issues have plagued him at times in Japan. Only 16 of his 25 appearances in 2022 were at the NPB's top level.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Hanshin Tigers on Twitter
15 hours agoThe Washington Nationals signed infielder Franklin Barreto to a minor-league deal on Thursday. Barreto last played in the big leagues in the shortened 2020 season with the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels, but he'll have a decent shot to make it back in 2023 with the rebuilding Nationals. He signed a minor-league deal with the Houston Astros in 2022 and played in 73 games for Triple-A Sugar Land, hitting just .162/.259/.274 with six home runs, 21 RBI, 27 runs scored and 11 stolen bases in 274 plate appearances on the farm. The 26-year-old will be competing for an MLB roster spot in spring training next year in D.C.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Heyman
21 hours agoThe Detroit Tigers and left-hander Matthew Boyd agreed to a deal on Thursday, pending a physical, according to sources familiar with the deal. MLB Network's Jon Heyman is reporting that the deal is for $10 million-plus. The 31-year-old southpaw spent seven seasons with the Tigers from 2015 to 2021 and returns to a team looking to overhaul its pitching staff under new president Scott Harris. Boyd signed with the San Francisco Giants in 2022 and was traded to the Seattle Mariners in early August. He made just 10 relief appearances (13 1/3 innings) but was great with a 1.35 ERA, 13 strikeouts and eight walks for the M's. Boyd didn't make his season debut until September due to injury, but when healthy, he could be an effective swing man for Detroit's pitching staff.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: ESPN.com - Jeff Passan
21 hours agoFree-agent relief pitcher Trevor Rosenthal (lat) said he is healthy and is looking for an opportunity to pitch in 2023. Rosenthal last pitched in the big leagues in the shortened 2020 season with the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres, posting a legitimate 1.90 ERA (2.22 FIP), a 0.84 WHIP, 11 saves and 38 strikeouts in 23 2/3 relief innings. He then signed a one-year deal with the Oakland Athletics for the 2021 season but never pitched after having thoracic outlet surgery on his shoulder and then surgery to fix a torn labrum in his hip that summer. Rosenthal signed with the San Francisco Giants late this season, but hamstring and lat injuries kept him from pitching with the team. It remains to be seen if a team will take a chance on the hard-throwing, injury-prone right-hander for the 2023 season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Bally Sports Midwest - Jim Hayes
22 hours agoThe Detroit Tigers re-signed right-hander Miguel Diaz, infielder Jermaine Palacios, infielder/outfielder Brendon Davis and catcher Michael Papierski to minor-league deals earlier this week and assigned them to Triple-A Toledo. Diaz is the most noteworthy name of the bunch. He was designated for assignment in the middle of last month and was non-tendered, but he'll remain in the organization as relief depth. The 28-year-old gave up one earned run on one hit while walking two and striking out three in 3 2/3 innings of work at the major-league level in 2022. In 65 innings for Toledo last season, he posted a 4.29 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, seven saves and 69 strikeouts in 58 relief appearances out of the bullpen.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLive - Evan Woodbery
22 hours agoThe Cleveland Guardians agreed to re-sign left-hander Anthony Gose (elbow) to a two-year minor-league deal on Thursday, according to sources. Gose continues to rehab after having Tommy John surgery in September, and he will not be able to play at all in 2023. The deal pays him $1 million per season if he's in the big leagues. The 32-year-old former outfielder went 3-0 for the Guardians in 2022 and posted a 4.71 ERA (5.06 FIP), a 1.38 WHIP, 28 strikeouts and 14 walks in 21 innings pitched in the big leagues over 22 relief appearances. He's obviously well off the fantasy radar and won't even pitch for Cleveland next season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: FanSided - Robert Murray
22 hours agoThe Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers are among the most serious suitors for free-agent outfielder Mitch Haniger, according to sources. Haniger wasn't given a $19.65 million qualifying offer from the Seattle Mariners at the end of the season, so he has hit free agency for the first time in his career. The 31-year-old has had his share of injury concerns in his career and suffered a high-ankle sprain in April that limited him to 57 games in 2022. When he was healthy, he was solid for the M's and fantasy managers with a .246/.308/.429 slash line with 11 home runs, 34 RBI and 31 runs scored in 247 plate appearances. Haniger was an All-Star in 2018 when he hit .285 with 26 home runs and 98 RBI in 157 games, and he also hit a career-high 39 home runs and drove in 100 runs in 157 games in 2021.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Morosi
2 days agoThe Cleveland Guardians are among the most active suitors for Oakland Athletics catcher Sean Murphy, the 2021 Gold Glove winner who could be dealt by the end of next week's winter meetings, according to sources. Murphy has proven to be an above-average hitting catcher in three-plus big-league seasons and is attractive to any team seeking catching help this offseason. In a career-high 612 plate appearances in 2022, he slashed .250/.332/.426 with 18 home runs and a career-low 20.3 percent strikeout rate. A trade away from the pitcher-friendly park in Oakland and to a better all-around offense should make Murphy even more attractive in fantasy in 2023. If the A's move Murphy this offseason, it would open up playing time for top catching prospect Shea Langeliers.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MLB Network - Jon Morosi
2 days agoThe Washington Nationals agreed to an undisclosed one-year major-league deal with outfielder Stone Garrett on Tuesday. Garrett made his major-league debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022, going 21-for-76 (.276) with four home runs, 10 RBI, 13 runs scored and three stolen bases in 84 plate appearances in 27 games played. The 27-year-old was able to hold his own in his first taste of big-league pitching and will have a nice opportunity to compete for a roster spot in spring training next year alongside the likes of Alex Call and Lane Thomas. In a rebuilding Nationals organization, Garrett should see plenty of at-bats at the major-league level in 2023.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Nationals Twitter
2 days agoThe Oakland Athletics signed right-hander Jasseel De La Cruz to a minor-league deal on Tuesday. De La Cruz was a significant prospect for the Atlanta Braves going into the 2020 season, but he has struggled in the minors the last two years. The 25-year-old will hope to have better luck with the rebuilding A's. In three minor-league levels with the Braves last year, De La Cruz had a rough 7.18 ERA, a 1.82 WHIP, 28 strikeouts and 12 walks in 26 1/3 innings pitched in 20 appearances (five starts). He allowed 14 runs (11 earned) on 20 hits while walking seven and striking out 11 in 12 1/3 innings for Triple-A Gwinnett.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Melissa Lockard
2 days agoBaltimore Orioles right-hander Seth Johnson (elbow), who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, said he's "hoping to be able to pitch by next August, maybe in some Complex League games." Johnson came to Baltimore in a three-team trade that involved the Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros on Aug. 1. Per MLB Pipeline, Johnson is Baltimore's No. 10 prospect. In seven games before his injury in 2022, he had a 3.00 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 41 strikeouts and 11 walks in 27 innings for High-A Bowling Green. The O's like what they have long term in the 24-year-old, but he won't be at 100 percent until 2024. Johnson is a late bloomer with a high-90s fastball and a swing-and-miss slider as his primary offerings.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: MASN Sports - Roch Kubatko
2 days agoLos Angeles Dodgers right-handers Carlos Duran (elbow) and Edgardo Henriquez (elbow) both recently underwent Tommy John surgery and will miss all of the 2023 season next year. The two big, hard-throwing righties were among the team's top pitching prospects at the Single-A levels. According to MLB Pipeline, Duran is ranked as the club's No. 19 prospect, with Henriquez checking in at No. 23. In 14 outings (13 starts) for High-A Great Lakes this year, Duran had a 4.25 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 68 strikeouts and 24 walks in 48 2/3 innings. Henriquez, 20, also made 14 appearances (13 starts) for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and posted a 4.54 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, 44 strikeouts and 18 walks in 35 2/3 frames.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBallerSource: Baseball America - Kyle Glaser
