Yadier Molina Officially Returns To Cardinals
4 years agoThe St. Louis Cardinals agreed on a one-year, $9 million deal to re-sign catcher Yadier Molina on Monday. Molina returns to the team he's been with for the last 17 years, and St. Louis also brought back pitching legend Adam Wainwright this offseason on a one-year contract. The 38-year-old Molina is a nine-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner and slashed .262/.303/.359 in 42 games in the shortened 2020 campaign. He's appeared in more games (2,025) than any Cardinals catcher and has played the third-most games in Cardinals history. Molina is a .281/.333/.404 career hitter and is in the top 10 in Cardinals history in bWAR, at-bats, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, extra-base hits and total bases. But the Puerto Rican native is more valuable for his defense and work with the team's pitchers than he is with his bat these days, and he has 20-plus homers in a season just twice in his lengthy career.
